Forty subjects (36 with polymorphic light eruption and four with solar urticaria) were treated during the spring and early summer of the years 1982 to 1985 with either UVB phototherapy (a total of 54 treatment courses in subjects with polymorphic light eruption) or photochemotherapy (PUVA) (18 treatment courses in polymorphic light eruption and eight in solar urticaria patients). Both forms of prophylactic therapy were found to be effective in 90% of those with polymorphic light eruption, and PUVA in all those with solar urticaria. The optimum duration of treatment was 5 weeks. Adverse reactions, although common, were usually slight and rarely required alteration of the treatment regimen.

Background Candida species are responsible for various clinical infections ranging from mucocutaneous infection to life threatening invasive diseases along with increased resistance to antifungal drugs has made a serious concern. Resistance to antifungal agents has increased during the last decade. Thus, identification of Candida up to species level and its antifungal susceptibility testing has a paramount significance in the management of Candidal infections. The aim of the study was to speciate Candida species and to determine antifungal susceptibility pattern of Candida species to antifungal agents.MethodsA total of 100 consecutive Candida species were isolated from 1248 clinical specimens over 7 months period. Growths on Sabouraud dextrose agar were evaluated for colony appearance, macroscopic examination, Gram staining, germ tube test and urea hydrolysis test. Further, they were processed for Candida speciation on CHROMagar. Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed as recommended by Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) M44-A document.ResultsOut of 100 Candida isolates, Candida albicans (56%) was the most common species. Among the non-albicans Candida species, Candida tropicalis (20%) was the predominant isolate followed by Candida glabrata (14%). Regarding antifungal susceptibility pattern, Candida species were more susceptible to clotrimazole (82%) followed by fluconazole (64%) and miconazole (44%).Conclusions Candida albicans was the predominant species responsible for various Candidal infections. Among commonly used antifungal drugs clotrimazole, miconazole and fluconazole were most effective.

Purpose Sonography has been used to evaluate children with dengue hemorrhagic fever, but to our knowledge no such studies have been conducted with adults. We present the sonographic findings in 40 adults with severe (grade III) dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). Methods Forty patients (30 men and 10 women, aged 16–65 years) given a presumptive diagnosis of grade III dengue hemorrhagic fever during a documented regional epidemic underwent abdominal sonography. Ten also underwent chest radiography. Serologic confirmation was obtained in 5 patients, and in the rest the diagnosis was based on epidemiologic and clinical findings. Results Sonographic findings included pleural effusion in 21 patients (53%), thickening of the gallbladder wall in 17 (43%), and mild ascites in 6 (15%). These findings were similar to those of previous studies of severe DHF in children, although the incidence of pleural effusion and ascites was slightly lower in our series. Neither pleural effusion nor ascites was apparent on clinical examination. Of the 10 patients who underwent both sonography and chest radiography, sonography detected pleural effusion in all 10, whereas radiography detected it in only 3. Conclusions Sonographic findings in DHF in adults (pleural effusions, ascites, and gallbladder wall thickening) were similar to those described for children but seem to be of lesser severity. Abdominal sonography is a useful diagnostic tool for confirming suspected cases of DHF. Sonography was found to be superior to chest radiography in detecting pleural effusions in the 10 patients in whom radiographs were available. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
