BackgroundWith an estimated 13,000 newly diagnosed patients per year, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most common types of cancer in males in Indonesia. Moreover, most patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease. This study aimed to explore the health behaviors of patients diagnosed with NPC and the possible causes of patient delay in NPC diagnosis.MethodsA qualitative research method was used to gain better insight into patient behaviors. Twelve patients were interviewed using semi-structured interview guidelines. All interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed according to a standard content analysis framework.ResultsMost patients had limited knowledge regarding NPC and its causes. Fifty percent of the patients had a delay of six months from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis. The main reason for this delay was the lack of awareness among the patients, which was influenced by their environment, economic status, family, culture, and religion. The perceived barriers to seeking medical help included direct non-medical costs not covered by health insurance, complex and time-consuming insurance and referral systems, and negative experiences in the past. Health insurance did motivate people to seek medical help.ConclusionThis study provides additional insight into patients’ motivations to delay seeking medical help and can facilitate the design of NPC education programs. To improve awareness of the abovementioned causes for delay, community-based education programs are highly warranted and should focus on the recognition of NPC symptoms and possible solutions to overcome the main barriers at an earlier disease stage.
An experiment was conducted to increase the quality of rice bran by fermentation using Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and humic substances and its utilization as a feed ingredient for broiler chickens. The experiment was carried out in two steps. First, the fermentation process was done using a completely randomized design in factorial with 16 treatments: i) Dosage of B. amyloliquefaciens (2.108 cfu/g), 10 and 20 g/kg; ii) Graded levels of humic substances, 0, 100, 200, and 400 ppm; iii) Length of fermentation, three and five days. The results showed that the fermentation significantly (p<0.05) reduced crude fiber content. The recommended conditions for fermentation of rice bran: 20 g/kg dosage of inoculums B. amyloliquefaciens, 100 ppm level of humic substances and three days fermentation period. The second step was a feeding trial to evaluate the fermented rice bran (FRB) as a feed ingredient for broiler chickens. Three hundred and seventy-five one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned into five treatment diets. Arrangement of the diets as follows: 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% level of FRB and the diets formulation based on equal amounts of energy and protein. The results showed that 15% inclusion of FRB in the diet provided the best bodyweight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) values. In conclusion, the nutrient content of rice bran improved after fermentation and the utilization of FRB as a feed ingredient for broiler chickens could be included up to 15% of the broiler diet.
Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) was still a public health problem that has been more than 20 years with various efforts. Community participation was great for reducing the incidence of DHF. Community empowerment will greatly assist the government in succeeding DHF preventive efforts so that DHF can be controlled. The method used in this study was a literature study that examines the various references closely related to community empowerment in the control of DHF diseases. References examined come from the results of research both from within or abroad, books and official reports issued within a period of not more than 10 years. The number of literature studied was 35 literatures. Community empowerment in the control of DHF was necessary because the government can not run alone in efforts to control DHF. All programs that were rolled out will be useless if the community was not involved in planning, monitoring and evaluation processes. This is because DHF was related to environmental problems in which humans were involved in creating an enabling environment for the spread of DHF Community empowerment in . DHF control was important to support the implementation and sustainability of DHF control program.

The increasing population in North Kalimantan will affect the provision of land. Agricultural land conversion cannot be avoided to meet the social and economic needs of the population. To find out land conversion and its impacts in North Kalimantan, a study of a) changes in agricultural land area, b) changes in rice production and c) the effect of changes in agricultural land area on North Kalimantan rice production. Quantitative methods of secondary data analysis were carried out to assess rice production and changes in agricultural land presented in frequency tables, graphs and maps. Analysis of the effect of agricultural land area on rice production in North Kalimantan Province was carried out using linear regression analysis. The results showed that the agricultural land area in North Kalimantan in 2012-2017 had a change of 4,955 ha or around 19.56 percent.. Rice commodities in North Kalimantan in general decreased by 25,468 tons or 0.04 percent. While for agricultural land area significantly (0.029) has an effect on rice production in North Kalimantan.
