The results show that C. heyneana contains antioxidant compounds and has potent anti-aging activity, indicating that it can be used as an anti-aging drug candidate or as a phyto-cosmeceutical.
Introduction The structural changes underlying permanent noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) include loss of the sensory hair cells, damage to their stereocilia, and supporting tissues within the cochlear lateral wall. Objective The objective of this study is to demonstrate curcumin as a safe and effective therapeutic agent in the prevention and treatment for fibroblasts damage within the cochlear supporting tissues and lateral wall through cell death pathway. Methods We divided 24 Rattus norvegicus into 4 groups, Group 1: control; Group 2: noise (+); Group 3: noise (+), 50 mg/day curcumin (+); Group 4: noise (+), 100 mg/day curcumin (+). We provided the noise exposure dose at 100 dB SPL for two hours over two weeks and administered the curcumin orally over two weeks. We examined all samples for the expressions of calcineurin, nuclear factor of activated T-cells cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1), and apoptotic index of cochlear fibroblasts. Results We found significant differences for the expressions of calcineurin (p < 0.05) in all groups, significant differences for the expressions of NFATc1 (p < 0.05) in all groups, except in Groups 1 and 4, and significant differences for the apoptotic index (p < 0.05) in all groups. Conclusion Curcumin proved to be potentially effective in the prevention and treatment for fibroblasts damage within the cochlear supporting tissues and lateral wall regarding the decreased expression of calcineurin, NFATc1, and apoptotic index of cochlear fibroblasts.
Research on anti inflammatory activity of the fruit of Morinda citrifolia Linn. Or known as pace in Indonesia language has been done by using three methods of assays i.e. anti inflammatory bioactivity assay by measuring the reduction of carrageen-induced oedema in rats analgesic bioactivity assay using writhing test method on mice, and vascular permeability bioactivity assay on mice induced by acetic acid. Results showed that dried juice of the fruit at the dose 1500 mg/kg body weight decreased the volume of oedema up to 64 percent and reduced the pain up to 54 percent. At the dose 2100 mg/kg body weight the dried juice reduced the vascular permeability up to 72 percent.
Talango Village is one of the villages located in Talango District, Sumenep Regency. The people of this village make a living mainly as fishermen and farmers. One of the habits carried out by fishers and farmers in between their activities is smoking. The nicotine in cigarette smoke can increase blood pressure and heart rate, narrow arteries, harden their walls, and make blood more likely to clot. This condition can increase the risk of hypertension or high blood pressure. Based on interviews and surveys with partners Yayasan Jala Tani Pertiwi, education about hypertension prevention needs to be carried out to prevent hypertension in fishers and hypertension in Talango Village. This problem has prompted a service team to design educational activities to prevent hypertension by manufacturing herbal teas. This activity is structured through the first step, namely the preparation stage (compilation of training modules, participant selection, and evaluation media creation), the second stage (the process of implementing activities with pre-/post-test and discussion), and the third stage (evaluating the results of the training). A total of 20 farmers and fishers who are members of the Jala Tani Pertiwi Foundation were given education about hypertension, then continued with training to make anti-hypertensive herbal teas. The evaluation results showed an increase in participants' understanding of the material provided by 34%. Participants are known to have been able to understand and make herbal teas made from Moringa leaves, jasmine flowers, lemongrass leaves, and roselle flowers. Furthermore, to increase the participants' interest in this activity, the service team also taught them how to make tea packaging and how to sell it.
This research was an effort to reveal the effect of fruit juice of labu siam (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz) on total cholesterol and total glyceride of mice serum and also to reveal the secondary metabolites content of the juice. In this research, four groups of mice each consist of 8 was used. First group ws given normal food, the second group was given hyperlipidemic inducer. The third group was given hyperlipidemic inducer and fruit juice at dosage 0.546 mg/kg b.w. The third group was given hyperlipidemic inducer and fruit juice at dosage 1.092 mg/g b.w. The exogenic and endogenic hyperlipidemic inducers used were cholesterol suspension and propyl thiouracyl 0.01 percent, espectively. Both the inducer and the juice were given every day orally for three weeks. At the last day, the mice were fasted for 12-24 hours and the blood was collected intracardially. Assay of cholesterol and triglyceride in the sera was carried out using the reagent kits. Statistical analysis shows that the administration of the fruit juice of ‘labu siam’ at dosage 0.546 mg/g and 1.092 mg/g b.w. can decrease the triglyceride concentration in the sera. The dose 0.546 mg/g decreases the total cholesterol concentration, but the dose 1.092 mg/g did not show the sera cholesterol decreasing activity. Phytochemical screening for the constituents of the juice indicated that the juice contains saponin glycosides.
