Background
Considering the fact that family members necessarily spend more time together during the pandemic, this study aims to reveal the perceptions of parents with children who have autism spectrum disorder of the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey and their experiences of the difficulties during the pandemic.
Method
A qualitative phenomenology design was used in the study. Seven mothers and one father gave their consent and participated in the study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using content analysis.
Results
The results of the analysis were collected in two broad themes using 68 codes. The perspective of the parents, who evaluated the pandemic process positively in the beginning, became negative as lockdown lengthened. The issues and adverse effects of the pandemic that they most talked about were the increasing roles and responsibilities of parents, the deep impact on their mental health, and the problems experienced in distance education.
Conclusions
During this period, parents who were psychologically depressed wanted to feel that they were not alone. Parents made many suggestions and recommendations so that others would not have the same experience.
The current study aimed to design technology-supported interactive social stories to teach social skills to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A design-based research was implemented with children with ASD along with the participation of their mothers, teachers, peers and field experts. An iterative remediation process was followed through the feedback of participants. The data collection process was further supported through researcher notes, interviews, video-recorded observations and log files. Three cycles of remediation were employed to improve the interactive materials, which lead them to be perceived as pleasant, interesting, engaging and user-friendly. It was observed that children gained useful non-target skills as well as the target behaviors. Interactive stories were particularly helpful in raising satisfaction as they provided children with the opportunity to make their own learning decisions.
Down syndrome is a sensitive subject and one that requires efforts being made to improve conditions of individuals with Down syndrome across multiple dimensions. Social awareness is one of the important dimensions for the inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome. Online spaces as well as offline spaces are an important part of our daily lives, and these spaces provide numerous opportunities to create, increase and sustain awareness of Down syndrome. From this perspective, this study examines the awareness of Down syndrome in online spaces. With this objective in mind, the research examined 4,168 conversations from 2,430 individuals that were posted in a microblogging service on WDSD. The research findings indicate that the Down syndrome network is distributed in time and space with diverse backgrounds. Key influencers were those who were already associated with Down syndrome. Furthermore, the social mood for Down syndrome was found to be positive. Sani-Bozkurt, S. (2018). Identifying network structure, influencers and social mood in digital spheres: a sentiment and content analysis of Down syndrome awareness.
The aim of this study was to explore type of studies implemented for the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) community by institutions that directly deal with ASD during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey and in the world. The descriptive case study design was used in the study. The contents on the websites of the institutions were analyzed through document analysis. According to the results, it was observed that the data consisted of supporting contents related to education, health, and public policies regarding the COVID-19 process and that the contents were frequently presented through webinars, visual representations, electronic text sources, online communication platforms, and social media environments. During this process, informative studies were frequently carried out and practical studies were rarely conducted. While it is considered that institutional studies both in Turkey and in the world may serve as an example to other institutional studies, it is considered that the diversity of these examples should be increased through cooperation between institutions.
Preferring the teaching profession and the attitudes toward it are directly related to the profession's expectations. Expectations are important factors determining whether an attitude will turn into a behavior. Since the expectation is directly related to teachers' qualification, it is vital to determine pre-service teachers' expectations from the teaching profession. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the expectations of preservice teachers in the department of teaching individuals with intellectual disabilities in terms of (a) social, (b) economic, (c) professional development, and (d) legislative and executive regulations.
