Social stories play a significant part in the teaching skills and behaviors to children with ASD who lack social skills. The purpose of this study is to analyze studies in which social stories were used for teaching social skills to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The present study includes a descriptive review and meta-analysis of single-subject studies that met the criteria. In all studies, social validity, maintenance, and generalization data were collected in 56.25%, 50%, and 31.25% of the respective studies. Although most studies showed that social stories were effective in teaching social skills to children with ASD in the descriptive study, in the meta-analytic study, the mean of Percantage of Non-overlapping Data (PND) scores for all studies was 63.43%, with a range of 0% to 100%. Results suggest that social stories should not yet be considered as evidence based practice for teaching social skills to individuals with ASD. However, social stories seem to be a promising practice that warrants future research. Results will be discussed extensively and future directions for research and practice will be addressed.
The current study aimed to design technology-supported interactive social stories to teach social skills to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A design-based research was implemented with children with ASD along with the participation of their mothers, teachers, peers and field experts. An iterative remediation process was followed through the feedback of participants. The data collection process was further supported through researcher notes, interviews, video-recorded observations and log files. Three cycles of remediation were employed to improve the interactive materials, which lead them to be perceived as pleasant, interesting, engaging and user-friendly. It was observed that children gained useful non-target skills as well as the target behaviors. Interactive stories were particularly helpful in raising satisfaction as they provided children with the opportunity to make their own learning decisions.
The most important purpose of teacher training programs is to train qualified teachers, and it is just as important for this process to be based on empirical results as it is to avoid political concerns (Güven, 2001). The fundamental aim of special education teacher training programs is to enable pre-service teachers to acquire evidencebased practices and to apply them competently in a classroom setting. Despite this aim, the discrepancies existing between findings found a Sezgin VURAN, Ph.D., is currently an associate professor of Special Education. It is significant that parents of children with autism participate in the process of education of their children. In this study, the effects of ADOSEP, which is a family education program prepared to teach parents how to use a research-based discrete trial method, on teaching
Mock trial is an activity commonly used both in and out of the class in citizenship education. Mock trial is a simulation technique rooted in experiential learning. This study aimed to evaluate the Mock trial method used by a primary school teacher in Turkey to solve the problems faced during lessons. Research Methods: This research is designed as an intrinsic case study, which involves the use of Mock trials to solve the classroom problems. Participants were a classroom teacher and 20 fourth grade students attending her class. Research data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Findings: Mock trial procedure was conducted during the last 15 minutes of the lessons at one-totwo-month intervals. The problem to be handled in the Mock trial is decided by the consensus of the
