We evaluated the usefulness of saponification, direct solvent extraction, and Soxhlet extraction as extraction methods to determine the amounts of tocopherols in soybeans. Soxhlet extraction yielded the highest analytical values for each tocopherol homolog and was the best method for quantifying tocopherols in soybeans. Coupling of simple Soxhlet extraction with HPLC provided a highly reproducible procedure to quantify tocopherols in soybeans. The percent mean recovery 6 standard deviation (n = 5) was 103.2 6 1.21, 109.8 6 4.18, 93.8 6 1.12, and 106.9 6 1.54% for a-, b-, g-, and d-tocopherol, respectively. The linearity test for quantification was carried out over the ranges of 0.4-10.0, 0.2-4.0, 2.0-16.0, and 0.4-10.0 mg/mL for a-, b-, g-, and dtocopherol, respectively. Regression analysis showed an excellent linear relationship (R 2 .0.998), and the results of the validation parameters were generally reliable and satisfactory.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the growth responses of zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) as affected by prohexadione-calcium foliar application for the effective labour saving and cost down management in the lawn yard, field and golf course etc. The leaf growth of zoysiagrass treated with prohexadione-calcium one day after mowing was significantly slow compared to the untreated plot. And the effect was continued up to 50 days. The growth inhibition rate at the treated plot was 46 to 50% compared to untreated plot and the leaf widths treated with prohexadione-calcium were narrower than control plot. The change of leaf dry weight 10 days after prohexadione-calcium treated was significantly shown less speedy than untrated plot and the results were continued up to 40 days after application. The SPAD values of the leaf colour were increased in the treated plots and continued for 40 days more.
Recently, rice growth and production have been influenced by climatic change worldwide. In particular, under low solar radiation and cloudy weather, rice plants show abnormal physiological responses. In this experiment, plants of the rice cultivar Samgwangbyeo grown 40% and 70% shading and natural conditions at the primordium initiation stage (PI) for 30 days and the booting stage for 10 days up to heading were compared. After shading treatments, culm lengths were significnatly longer than that in natural condition plots, and panicle lengths were shorter in the 40% and 70% shading treatment plots compared to control plots. After heading, the production of dry matter treated at the PI stage was significantly lower than that at the booting stage. SPAD values of the leaf color and N concentration of leaves treated with shading were greater than those under natural conditions. In the shading treatment, the lodging index at 20 days after heading was significantly higher than that in natural condition. For yield components, number of panicles, spikelet number per panicle, and ripened grain ratio significantly decreased with shading treatment; thus, rice yield decreased significantly. For rice quality, the protein content of the head rice treated with shading was significantly higher than that in the control plot, but the amylose content of rice treated with shading was signifiantly lower than that in rice in control plots.
Agronomic characteristics and grain properties of Korean wheat of 175 farmers in nationwide for two years, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, were evaluated to support basic data for improving grain quality of Korean wheat and enhancing Korean wheat consumption. Agronomic characteristics, including culm length, spike length, number of spike/m 2 and rate of off-type plant, and grain properties, including 1000 kernel weight, test weight, moisture, ash and protein content, were influenced by year and location. Number of spike/m 2 , test weight, moisture, ash and protein content of wheat cultivated in 2011 were higher than those of 2012 and culm length, spike length, rate of off-type plant and 1000 kernel weight of 2012 were higher than those of 2011. Wheat cultivated in southern part of Korea showed higher culm length and 1000 kernel weight and lower test weight than those of northern part of Korea. Spike length, number of spike/m 2 and test weight were reduced by additional fertilization after mid of March, although there was no significant difference between date of additional fertilization and grain properties. Cultivated wheats in Jeollabuk-do showed lower ash content and higher protein content than those of other provinces and cultivated wheats in Jeollanam-do exhibited higher ash content than that of other provinces. As amount of fertilization increased, culm length, 1000 kernel weight and protein content increased and spike length and ash content were decreased, although date of additional fertilization did not effect on agronomic characteristics and grain properties. Amount of fertilization was positively correlated with 1000 kernel weight and protein content (r = 0.159, P < 0.05 and r = 0.212, P < 0.01, respectively) and was negatively correlated with ash content (r = -0.185, P < 0.05). Thousand kernel weight was negatively correlated with ash content (r = -0.226, P < 0.01) and positively correlated with protein content (r = 0.207, P < 0.01). Ash content increased as test weight and culm length decreased and 1000 kernel weight was influenced by culm and spike length (r = 0.397, P < 0.001 and r = -0.205, P < 0.01, respectively).
Production of high quality pigmented rice contained with high content of anthocyanin, and polyphenol was significantly influenced by cultivation environments like transplanting date and cultivation location. This study was carried out to establish an optimum transplanting date and cultivation region to produce maximum content of anthocyanin, polyphenol and antioxidant activity of pigmented rice varieties (black, red colored). Three transplanting times (May 20, June 5, June 20) and four different sites (Miryang, Uiseong, Sangju, Bonghwa) were evaluated with five pigmented rice cultivars. Anthocyanin and total polyphenol index to average temperature during 30 days after heading (DAH) of black, red pigmented rice varieties showed that anthocyanin and total polyphenol contents were decreased by 10% and 9%, respectively, with increasing average temperature of 1℃. The optimum ripening temperature of the 30 DAH for the production of high anthocyanin and total polyphenol was 22 to 23℃ for early maturity black rice, 21 to 22℃ for mid-late maturity of black and red rices, respectively. On the other hand, an estimated heading date of pigmented rices in return according to the optimum ripening temperature of the 30 DAH was ranged Aug. 11 to 17 for early maturity black rice, Aug. 25 for mid-late maturity black, red rice variety in Jecheon, Aug. 27 to Sep. 2 for early maturity type, Sep. 3 to 6 for mid-late type in Daegu. It seemed that Jecheon, Boeun, Mungyeong, and Yeongju were optimum regions for cultivation of pigmented rices. The estimated sowing date of pigmented rices for high anthocyanin and total polyphenol production based on the optimum heading date was May 18 to 26 for early maturity black rice variety, April 11 for mid-late black, red variety in Jecheon, May 23 to 28 for early type, April 9 to 26 for mid-late type in Boeun, respectively.
