Aim The objective of this study was to find out the effect of religious fasting on intraocular pressure. Methods Intra-ocular pressure by applanation tonometer was measured four times a day in 38 healthy young adult male patients. The mean age of patients was 29 years. Body weight was measured to assess the extent of dehydration caused by fasting. Results There was a statistically significant difference between the intra-ocular pressure during fasting and the non-fasting period (P Ͻ 0.001). There was weight loss ranging from 0.4 to 1.5 kg. Conclusion Fasting alters the diurnal intraocular pressure in the study population, ie young males 22-38 years.

Purpose: Unilateral lateral rectus recession is an alternative procedure in the treatment of moderate angle intermittent exotropia. However, longterm results of unilateral lateral rectus recession have not yet been studied. The aim of this study was to determine the long-term stability of alignment following unilateral lateral rectus recession in patients with intermittent exotropia with a deviation of 25 to 30 PD.
Patients and Methods: Thirty-two patients with intermittent exotropia with a deviation of 25 to 30 PD were included in this study. All patients underwent 8-mm unilateral lateral rectus recession by conventional techniques.
Results: Satisfactory results (± 5 PD of orthophoria) were obtained in 77.7% of the patients after a 3-year follow-up period. The mean correction achieved was 22.9 PD.
Conclusion: Our results indicate that 8-mm unilateral lateral rectus recession is an attractive alternative procedure in the treatment of intermittent exotropia with a deviation of 25 to 30 PD.

ABSTRACT.Purpose: The aim of present study was to compare the results of conjunctival closure by fibrin glue with vicryl in strabismus surgery. Methods: 19 patients undergoing bilateral symmetrical strabismus surgery were included in this study. Conjunctival incisions were closed with 6-0 vicryl in the right eye and fibrin glue in the left eye. Results: On first post-operative day 15 out of 19 eyes (78.9%) had well apposed conjunctiva, 3 out of 19 eyes (15.79%) had 1 mm retraction and one out of 19 eyes (5.26%) had 2 mm retraction, which needed suturing, in cases in which fibrin glue was applied. Increased discomfort and excessive watering was noted during the early postoperative period in 8 out of 19 eyes (42.1%), in eyes in which the conjunctiva was closed with 6-0 vicryl, as compared to none in the fibrin glued eyes (pΩ0.005). However, the difference disappeared after 21 days. Conclusion: Fibrin glue can be used as an alternative to suturing for conjunctival closure following strabismus surgery.
Purpose: To investigate whether the preoperative prism adaptation test is useful in patients with intermittent exotropia.
Methods: Sixty-five consecutive patients with basic-type intermittent exotropia <40 prism diopters (PD) comprised the study population in this prospective study. Patients were divided into two groups based on the results of the prism adaptation test. Patients with a negative response comprised group 1 and patients with a positive response comprised group 2. Group 1 patients (n=26) underwent surgery according to the original angle, and group 2 patients (n=27) underwent surgery in accordance with the change in the angle of deviation with prisms.
Results: Satisfactory motor alignment (±5 PD of orthophoria) was achieved in 14 (53.8%) group 1 patients and 24 (88.8%) group 2 patients (P=. 01). Mean residual deviation was 9.8 PD in group 1 and 4.5 PD in group 2 (P*s.05).
Conclusion: The prism adaptation test may be helpful in achieving a favorable surgical outcome in intermittent exotropia.
