La leishmaniasis es una enfermedad cutánea causado por un parásito del género leishmania. En la mayoría de los casos se trata de una zoonosis transmitida por la picadura de un vector. Los reservorios son animales peri domésticos o salvajes. Constituye un problema de salud pública en Costa Rica y es considerada una enfermedad del estrato social bajo. Presenta 3 formas clínicas: la visceral, mucocutánea y cutánea; esta última siendo la más común y en la que se basa este artículo. El diagnóstico requiere la sospecha clínica y la identificación del parasito, la microscopía de tejidos con el fin de visualizar el parasito es la técnica diagnostica más usada en el mundo y en Costa Rica. El tratamiento de primera línea son los antimonios pentavalentes, sin embargo, existen otras alternativas tanto como tratamientos locales y sistémicos.
