Living with both parents is a less robust barrier to substance use than qualitative aspects of family life, particularly attachment to mothers. The latter is a robust inhibitor of substance use irrespective of regional differences in drug availability, weakening only in the face of more generally problematic behaviour. Perhaps because of their greater tendency to risk-taking or rule breaking, supervision appears more important for male than female drug use. These findings underscore the role of families, but especially that of mothers, in regulating the substance-related behaviour of young people.
In English, two deictic space-time metaphors are in common usage: the Moving Ego metaphor conceptualizes the ego as moving forward through time and the Moving Time metaphor conceptualizes time as moving forward toward the ego (Clark, 1973). Although earlier research investigating the psychological reality of these metaphors has typically examined spatial influences on temporal reasoning (e.g., Boroditsky & Ramscar, 2002), recent lines of research have extended beyond this, providing initial evidence that personality differences and emotional experiences may also influence how people reason about events in time (Duffy & Feist, 2014; Hauser, Carter, & Meier, 2009; Richmond, Wilson, & Zinken, 2012). In this article, we investigate whether these relationships have force in real life. Building on the effects of individual differences in self-reported conscientiousness and procrastination found by Duffy and Feist (2014), we examined whether, in addition to self-reported conscientiousness and procrastination, there is a relationship between conscientious and procrastinating behaviors and temporal perspective. We found that participants who adopted the Moving Time perspective were more likely to exhibit conscientious behaviors, while those who adopted the Moving Ego perspective were more likely to procrastinate, suggesting that the earlier effects reach beyond the laboratory.
Species of phototrophic non‐sulfur bacteria produce methylated sulfur compounds, such as dimethylsulfide and dimethyldisulfide. In the presence of selenium oxyanions, analogous organicselenium compounds are formed. These findings suggest that this group of bacteria contribute to the volatilization and biogechemical cycling of sulfur and selenium.
This paper presents the most up-to date experimental results obtained during the integration of a 3-D Laser Scanner Tracking System and the current Space Vision System used by NASA. Half scale models of modules of the Space Station Freedom have been built for this demonstration and comparison between the current method using video cameras and the Laser Scanner System are presented. The variable resolution laser scanner can track, in real time, targets and geometrical features of an object. The Laser Scanner System uses two high-speed galvanometers and a collimated laser beam to address individual targets on the object. Very high-resolution images and excellent tracking accuracy are obtained using Lissajous figures that provide high pointing accuracy of a laser beam. The prototype automatically searches and tracks, in 3-D, targets attached to the object. The locations of the centroid of the detected targets are fed directly into the existing photosolution and attitude control modules of the Space Vision System (SVS).
