Abstract.We discuss a recent sounding rocket experiment which found charged dust in the Earth's tropical mesosphere. The dust detector was designed to measure small (5000-10000 amu) charged dust particles, most likely of meteoric origin. A 5 km thick layer of positively charged dust was found at an altitude of 90 kin, in the vicinity of an observed sporadic sodium layer and sporadic E layer. The observed dust was positively charged in the bulk of the dust layer, but was negatively charged near the bottom.

Instruments on the Auroral Turbulence rocket detected several intervals of weak electromagnetic oscillations at frequencies of 6-13 Hz in a strongly flickering auroral arc. These oscillations have amplitudes of up to 5B • 3 nT and 5E • 4 mV/m and have downward field-aligned Poynting fluxes of up to • 10 -s W/m 2. Fluctuations in the parallel electron flux at about 9 Hz were observed in association with the strongest of these oscillations. Simultaneous groundbased optical data show that the arc was flickering at frequencies of 8-15 Hz. The observed frequencies would match the oxygen cyclotron frequency at • 4500 km altitude. In one wave/particle event the apparent lag of the waves behind the modulated electrons implies a modulation source altitude of 2500-5000 km. We interpret these waves as electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves originating in the auroral acceleration region. Objective Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in adolescence, and acute pediatric mental health emergency department (ED) visits have doubled in the past decade. The objective of this study was to evaluate physiologic parameters relationship to suicide severity.Methods This was a prospective, observational study from April 2018 thru November 2019 in a tertiary care pediatric emergency department (ED) and inpatient pediatric psychiatric unit enrolling acutely suicidal adolescent patients. Patients wore a wrist device that used photoplethysmography for 7 days during their acute hospitalization to measure heart rate variability (HRV). During that time, Columbia Suicide Severity Scores (CSSRS) were assessed at 3 time points.Results There was complete device data and follow-up for 51 patients. There was an increase in the high frequency (HF) component of HRV in patients that had a 25% or greater decrease in their CSSRS (mean difference 11.89 ms/ Hz ; p-value 0.005). Patients with a CSSRS≥15 on day of enrollment had a lower, although not statistically significant, HF component (mean difference -8.34 ms/ Hz; p-value 0.071).Conclusion We found an inverse correlation between parasympathetic activity measured through the HF component and suicidality in an acutely suicidal population of adolescents. Wearable technology may have the ability to improve outpatient monitoring for earlier detection and intervention.
