Les débuts du monachisme taoïste ainsi que l'émergence des daoguan (abbayes, belvédères ou monastères), comme résidences et lieux de culte pour cette nouvelle catégorie de pratiquants, remonteraient à la deuxième moitié du cinquième siècle. Cette institution trouve certes son origine dans le bouddhisme chinois, mais son développement ultérieur s'inspire autant de la pensée taoïste. Cet article tente d'évaluer dans quelle mesure le monachisme a été sciemment encouragé par les auteurs des « anciennes écritures du Lingbao », ainsi que par Lu Xiujing (406-477), leur plus ancien promulgateur connu. L'auteur procède en examinant de près la représentation de la fonction ecclésiastique du maître du Rituel, apparue pour la première fois au sein du taoïsme dans les textes Lingbao. Par la suite, il analyse l'ordination, l'apparence physique, les résidences et les responsabilités attribuées à ces maîtres.
