We report on the development of the LISA Technology Package (LTP) experiment that will fly onboard the LISA Pathfinder mission of the European Space Agency in 2008. We first summarize the science rationale of the experiment aimed at showing the operational feasibility of the so-called transverse-traceless coordinate frame within the accuracy needed for LISA. We then show briefly the basic features of the instrument and we finally discuss its projected sensitivity and the extrapolation of its results to LISA.
The coordination of velum and oral gestures for English [n] is studied using real-time MRI movies to reconstruct vocal tract aperture functions. This technique allows for the examination of parts of the vocal tract otherwise inaccessible to dynamic imaging or movement tracking. The present experiment considers syllable onset, coda, and juncture geminate nasals and also addresses the effects of a variety of word stress patterns on segment internal coordination. We find a bimodal timing pattern in which near-synchrony of velum lowering and tongue tip raising characterizes the timing for onsets and temporal lag between the gestures is characteristic for codas, supporting and extending the findings of Krakow (1989Krakow ( ), 1993 for [m]. Intervocalic word-internal nasals are found to have timing patterns that are sensitive to the local stress context, which suggests the presence of an underlying timing specification that can yield flexibly.
Rotating magnetic fields (RMF) have been used to both form and maintain field reversed configurations (FRC) in quasisteady state. These experiments differ from steady-state rotamaks in that the FRCs are similar to those formed in theta-pinch devices, that is elongated and confined inside a flux conserver. The RMF creates an FRC by driving an azimuthal current which reverses an initial positive bias field. The FRC then expands radially, compressing the initial axial bias flux and raising the plasma density, until a balance is reached between the RMF drive force and the electron–ion friction. This generally results in a very high ratio of separatrix to flux conserver radius. The achievable final conditions are compared with simple analytic models to estimate the effective plasma resistivity. The RMF torque on the electrons is quickly transferred to the ions, but ion spin-up is limited in these low density experiments, presumably by ion-neutral friction, and does not influence the basic current drive process. However, the ion rotation can result in a rotating n=2 distortion if the separatrix radius is too far removed from the plasma tube wall.
Studies of speech accommodation provide evidence for change in use of language structures beyond the critical/sensitive period. For example, Sancier and Fowler (1997) found changes in the voice-onset-times (VOTs) of both languages of a Portuguese-English bilingual as a function of her language context. Though accommodation has been studied widely within a monolingual context, it has received less attention in and between the languages of bilinguals. We tested whether these findings of phonetic accommodation, speech accommodation at the phonetic level, would generalize to a sample of Spanish-English bilinguals. We recorded participants reading Spanish and English sentences after 3–4 months in the US and after 2–4 weeks in a Spanish speaking country and measured the VOTs of their voiceless plosives. Our statistical analyses show that participants’ English VOTs drifted towards those of the ambient language, but their Spanish VOTs did not. We found considerable variation in the extent of individual participants’ drift in English. Further analysis of our results suggested that native-likeness of L2 VOTs and extent of active language use predict the extent of drift. We provide a model based on principles of self-organizing dynamical systems to account for our Spanish-English phonetic drift findings and the Portuguese-English findings.
