Aims: There is dearth of information on the psychometric of measures of personality on Nigerian population. This study investigates the internal consistencies and validity scores on the Mini- International Personality Item Pool (mini-IPIP) on Nigerian respondents. Study Design: A cross-sectional survey design was used to validate the scale. Place of Study: University of Ibadan, Oyo State, South-western Nigeria. Between January and April 2022. Methodology: A multistage sampling technique was used to select two hundred and nineteen (219) individuals, made up of 113 (51.6%) of males and 106 (48.4%) of females, between the age of 35 and 61 years with Mean age = 46.49 ± SD = 6.23. The participants included administrative, technical and junior staff working in the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, and South-western Nigeria. Participants responded to The Big Five Inventory (BFI-10) and Mini-IPIP. The internal consistencies for the Mini-IPIP was calculated and obtained using Cronbach’s (α) reliability coefficient. Also, the concurrent validity coefficient was obtained using Pearson's Correlation Analysis, Min-IPIP was correlated with BFI-10 in order to ascertain the concurrent validity. The items total correlations were also obtained to test the relationship between each item and the composite/total item score. Results: A modest but acceptable internal consistency of Extraversion, α =.80; Agreeableness, α =.79, Conscientiousness, α =.84; Neuroticism, α = .83; and Openness to Experience α =.88 for the factors of mini-IPIP was revealed. Positive concurrent validity coefficient was equally observed between the subsections of Mini-IPIP and the BFI-10 (r = .34, .12, .18, .20, .11 for extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience subscales respectively). Conclusion: These findings provide evidence for the use of Mini-IPIP scale as screening tool for the assessment of human personality in Nigeria based on the five-factor model.
Literatures on high prevalence of domestic violence are well documented. There is however paucity of research on exposure to domestic violence relates to cyber bullying behavior among Nigerian adolescents. The focus of this study was to determine the correlation between Exposure to Domestic Violence (EDV), depression and cyber bullying behavior among secondary school adolescents. A total of 300 purposively selected secondary school adolescents in Oshodi Isolo, Lagos metropolis Nigeria responded to Child Exposure to Domestic Violence Scale (CEDV), Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children (CES-DC) and Online Victimization Scale for Adolescents (OVSA). Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Data was analyzed using the descriptive (frequency count) and Inferential statistics (Pearson moment correlation analysis). A high prevalence of EDV, depression and involvement of cyber bullying was reported. Patterns of the factors of cyberbullying ranged from 26.7% individual online racial discrimination to 37% vicarious online racial discrimination. EDV significantly positively related to depression and involvement in cyber bullying. Significant gender influence was observed on depressing and cyber bullying. Age categories significantly influenced cyber bullying. Authors conclude that a high prevalence of depression and involvement in cyber bullying exists among secondary school adolescents. EDV is a significant positive correlate of depression and cyber bullying. There is gender difference on depression and cyber bullying. Age categories influence cyber bullying among the adolescents.
University education, if properly managed remains an appropriate mechanism through which human and nation development could be attained. In spite of numerous studies that have explored academic performance in Nigeria, the contributions of parental prominence and student housing quality on academic success are yet to be explored in the nation's public universities. This study addresses this gap by raising this question: to what extent does parental prominence and student housing predict the attainment of academic success among university undergraduates? The cross-sectional survey design, with multi-stage and purposive sampling technique was adopted. Primary information was sourced from 426 final year students of OAU, OOU and AAUA. The outcome variable of this study was academic success; and it was measured by student's attainment of outstanding or weak academic success. The key explanatory variables were parental prominence and student housing quality. Multivariate rank ordered-logistic regression and ANOVA was applied using Stata 14. Results showed that academic success was negatively associated with student housing quality. Also, results showed that parental prominence (marital status, employment status, gender preference, occupation type) were statistically associated with academic success. Results further
Providing informal care, particularly for a person needing assistance for daily activities as a result of chronic illness such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), is a demanding task which requires time, dedication and preservation. In spite of burdens that caregivers of CDV patients are faced with, there are dearth of studies that have explored the level of the burden of care among relatives of CVD in Nigeria. This study addresses this gap by raising the question: to what extent does care for CVD patients affect caregiver's psychological, behavioral and physiological daily lives. The study was a cross-sectional survey and it adopted the purposive sampling technique. Primary data were sourced from 200 caregivers/relatives from three tertiary hospital: Federal Teaching Hospital Ido-Ekiti, Federal Medical Centre Owo and Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital Complex Ile-Ife. The outcome variable is caregiver's burden, and the key explanatory variables are self-esteem and optimism. The Zarit (ZBIS), Rosenburg Self Esteem and Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R) standardised psychological scales were employed to measure caregiver's burden, self-esteem and optimism. Pearson r was applied using Stata version 13. Results showed that a significant proportion of the caregivers experienced moderate to severe levels of burden. Also, results showed that caregivers' burden was not significantly associated with Self-esteem (r200 = 0.04, p >.025) and optimism (r200 = 0.07, p >.025). It was imperative to provide professional help and supportive counselling to caregivers of CVD patients, in order to reduce their burden, strengthen the coping skill and thus improve their quality of life. Contribution/Originality: The paper's primary contribution is that it documents empirical findings that are useful for research, clinical practice and counselling; as such document provides insights on the experience of these informal caregivers are strategies for valuable intervention programmes to reduce the burden among relatives of cardiovascular disease patients. 1. INTRODUCTION Burden of care are the experiences of caregivers of people who cannot for one reason or the other care for themselves. These experiences are traumatic in nature and subsist inform of shame, resentment, irritation, culpability, loneliness, stress, unhappiness in marriage, anxiety, depression, a retarded social life, repeated loss of self-esteem and dissatisfaction with life.In essence, caring becomes a burden and weigh down on caregivers because it poses multidimensional exertion ranging from social, physical emotional, financial and other health problems
