Overall uptake rates in this organized screening programme were encouraging, but nonetheless there was low uptake in the most ethnically diverse areas and a striking gradient by SES. Action to promote equality of uptake is needed to avoid widening inequalities in cancer mortality.
Chronic diarrhoea is a common problem, hence clear guidance on investigations is required. This is an updated guideline from 2003 for the investigations of chronic diarrhoea commissioned by the Clinical Services and Standards Committee of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG). This document has undergone significant revision in content through input by 13 members of the Guideline Development Group (GDG) representing various institutions. The GRADE system was used to appraise the quality of evidence and grading of recommendations.
The objectives of this study were to (i) measure genetic gain using a set of maize (Zea mays L.) single‐cross hybrids that were widely used in Chinese maize production from 1964 to 2001, (ii) determine if there were changes in morphological characteristics, and (iii) examine the germplasm backgrounds of these hybrids. Yield trials were conducted for 3 yr, using a split‐plot design. Each hybrid was planted at three different densities in four locations, two locations each representing summer and spring corn areas. Mean rates of genetic gain were 52 kg ha−1 yr−1 when measured at the spring locations, 69 kg ha−1 yr−1 when measured at the summer locations, and 60 kg ha−1 yr−1 when measured across all locations. There was no significant effect of planting density on genetic gain. Genetic gain has been largely contributed by increased yield per plant and this strategy was reflected in changes in ear and plant morphology. Analyses of pedigree backgrounds showed continuing dependence on U.S. germplasm backgrounds, notably C103, Oh43, Mo17, and Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic (BSSS).
This paper provides the first econometric analysis to distinguish between works councils in establishments where managers have a positive or negative view toward employee involvement in decision making. We similarly distinguish between establishments where no council is present in which management supports or does not support worker participation. We stress the potential role of works councils and participation in motivating employees. Our theoretical analysis and empirical results from German manufacturing establishment data show that the structure of the workforce, principal-agent problems between owners and managers, collective bargaining, direct employee involvement, human resource management practices, and market strategy and innovativeness all play important roles. Some conflicting conclusions in the works council literature may be due to the failure to distinguish among industrial relations participation regimes characterized by cooperative or uncooperative relationships between works councils and management. * The authors' affiliations are, respectively,

Controlled degradation of specific proteins is used by all organisms to change cell behavior in response to internal or external cues. Because ATP-dependent proteases, such as ClpXP, have a broad range of targets, accessory proteins called adaptors are often necessary for selective substrate proteolysis. Here we show that three proteins work together as a multicomponent adaptor to stimulate the degradation of a key regulatory protein, CtrA, in
Caulobacter crescentus
. The adaptor is only functional when one of the components, CpdR, is unphosphorylated and when another component, PopA, is bound to the signaling molecule cyclic diguanylate. These features ensure that CtrA is only proteolyzed during a specific window in the
Caulobacter
cell-division cycle.
