Á/ Oikos 111: 514 Á/524.Availability of adequate nutrition and (rearing) density are among the most important factors affecting growth, development and reproduction in animals. In holometabolous insects diets and energetic needs change between life stages, with storing of larval resources, adult feeding and reproduction being linked strategies. Nevertheless, studies investigating nutritional (and density) effects across metamorphic boundaries are largely lacking. We aim at disentangling the functional basis of reproductive patterns by independently manipulating larval and adult (1) density and (2) access to food, respectively, in the tropical butterfly, Bicyclus anynana . (1) A high larval rearing density had, contrary to common wisdom, very little impact on body size, but reduced larval development time through increased growth rates. The latter is thought to be an adaptation to high densities, driven by the risk of larval food resources becoming exhausted before reaching metamorphosis. Larval density and male company during oviposition (i.e. adult density) had no detectable effects on female reproduction. (2) Larval food stress prolonged larval development time and reduced larval growth rate, body size, fecundity and reproductive investment. Detrimental effects on female reproduction were mediated through a reduction in body size. Additional negative effects of adult food stress on fecundity were largely confined to females being fed as larvae ad libitum, while those being previously starved showed reduced performance regardless of adult income. Effects on egg size were inconsistent and, overall, marginal. Our results show that restricted food access in different developmental stages may set different limits to reproduction, either posed by shortage of larval-derived storage reserves (i.e. nitrogenous compounds) or adult income (i.e. carbohydrates). Thus, one should be cautious when stating that one or the other type of nutrients is ultimately limiting to reproduction. Rather, our findings highlight the importance of resource congruence and of considering both, larval-and adult-derived resources for reproduction.The pattern of resource allocation has critical consequences for individual fitness and is fundamental to numerous fields of research in behavioural, evolutionary and population ecology. Globally increasing temperatures may strongly affect insect herbivore performance, as their growth and development is directly linked to ambient temperature as well as host-plant quality. In contrast to direct effects of temperature on herbivores, indirect effects mediated via thermal effects on host-plant quality are only poorly understood, despite having the potential to substantially impact performance and thereby to alter responses to the changing climatic conditions. We here use a full-factorial design to explore the direct (larvae were reared at 17 °C or 25 °C) and indirect effects (host plants were reared at 17 °C or 25 °C) of temperature on larval growth and life-history traits in the temperate-zone butterfly Pieris napi. Direct temperature effects reflected the common pattern of prolonged development and increased body mass at lower temperatures. At the higher temperature, efficiency of converting food into body matter was much reduced being accompanied by an increased food intake, suggesting compensatory feeding. Indirect temperature effects were apparent as reduced body mass, longer development time, an increased food intake, and a reduced efficiency of converting food into body matter in larvae feeding on plants grown at the higher temperature, thus indicating poor host-plant quality. The effects of host-plant quality were more pronounced at the higher temperature, at which compensatory feeding was much less efficient. Our results highlight that temperature-mediated changes in host-plant quality are a significant, but largely overlooked source of variation in herbivore performance. Such effects may exaggerate negative effects of global warming, which should be considered when trying to forecast species' responses to climate change.

h Population-based studies on Staphylococcus aureus nasal colonization are scarce. We examined the prevalence, resistance, and molecular diversity of S. aureus in the general population in Northeast Germany. Nasal swabs were obtained from 3,891 adults in the large-scale population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP-TREND). Isolates were characterized using spa genotyping, as well as antibiotic resistance and virulence gene profiling. We observed an S. aureus prevalence of 27.2%. Nasal S. aureus carriage was associated with male sex and inversely correlated with age. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) accounted for 0.95% of the colonizing S. aureus strains. MRSA carriage was associated with frequent visits to hospitals, nursing homes, or retirement homes within the previous 24 months. All MRSA strains were resistant to multiple antibiotics. Most MRSA isolates belonged to the pandemic European hospital-acquired MRSA sequence type 22 (HA-MRSA-ST22) lineage. We also detected one livestock-associated MRSA ST398 (LA-MRSA-ST398) isolate, as well as six livestock-associated methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (LA-MSSA) isolates (clonal complex 1 [CC1], CC97, and CC398). spa typing revealed a diverse but also highly clonal S. aureus population structure. We identified a total of 357 spa types, which were grouped into 30 CCs or sequence types. The major seven CCs (CC30, CC45, CC15, CC8, CC7, CC22, and CC25) included 75% of all isolates. Virulence gene patterns were strongly linked to the clonal background. In conclusion, MSSA and MRSA prevalences and the molecular diversity of S. aureus in Northeast Germany are consistent with those of other European countries. The detection of HA-MRSA and LA-MRSA within the general population indicates possible transmission from hospitals and livestock, respectively, and should be closely monitored.

Climate‐change induced shifts in species’ temporal and geographic niches have been well documented, while plastic and genetic responses to climatic change have received much less attention. Plastic responses to changes in temperature are generally well understood, though most experimental studies to date have used constant temperature regimes, the reliability of which is under debate. We here investigate plastic responses in the widespread butterfly Pieris napi to simulated climate change, using ecologically realistic diurnal temperature cycles and current and predicted temperature regimes including effects of a heat wave. Increasing the temperature mean by 3 °C predominantly affected developmental times, cold resistance and adult life span, while an increase in the diurnal temperature amplitude had very little effects. Immune function responded only weakly to different thermal regimes. The simulation of a prolonged heat wave severely impaired juvenile survival, body size and longevity, supporting the wide‐held notion that extreme weather events will be much more important for species’ performance and local survival than moderate increases in temperature means. Given that the frequency of extreme weather events is predicted to increase with climate change, even widespread species may be negatively affected.
