Dans les réformes du doctorat en France, la mission d’accompagnement à l’insertion professionnelle est récente. En comparaison aux autres cycles universitaires, cette mission a la particularité d’être dévolue aux enseignants-chercheurs. En élargissant la palette de leurs activités, cette mission vient questionner les formes de socialisation professionnelle dans un métier en mutation. Cette recherche s’appuie sur des entretiens menés avec des enseignants-chercheurs sur leur conception d’encadrant et leur implication dans la formation de doctorants en sciences humaines et sociales (SHS) au sein d’écoles doctorales. Les discours sur les pratiques et modèles d’encadrement articulent d’une part des conceptions et valeurs disciplinaires de la recherche et d’autre part des types de références à des logiques hors champ académique, centrées notamment sur une utilité "externe" du diplôme, et des logiques plus intégratives des doctorants (aux recherches, aux laboratoires, etc.).
