Este estudo aborda a trajetória de Luiz Alexandre de Oliveira, um estudante negro, pobre e deficiente visual que alcançou projeção social como professor, diretor e proprietário de instituições educativas em Campo Grande, no então sul de Mato Grosso. Além disso, as memórias do professor destacam suas relações com a comunidade e com a escola japonesa no período varguista (1937-1945). As análises decorrem do cruzamento de fontes memorialísticas e documentais, sob a ótica dos estudos de Pierre Bourdieu. O acesso ao ensino secundário proporcionou-lhe a inserção em outros campos sociais, bem como permitiu que se tornasse uma referência de prestígio da cidade, sendo reconhecido como benfeitor pela comunidade japonesa ao resguardar os bens e proteger a escola japonesa.
