Contrairement à ce que pourrait laisser supposer l'imagerie communément associée à la figure du « prof de gym », le recrutement social et les profils culturels des enseignants en EPS ne diffèrent pas spécialement de ceux de leurs autres collègues de l'enseignement secondaire. C'est ce qui ressort d'une enquête par questionnaire auprès d'un échantillon de 1 500 enseignants en poste dans le Nord-Pas-de-Calais qui vient, de ce point de vue, mettre en perspective les observations convergentes d'une série de travaux socio-historiques réalisés ces trente dernières années dans différentes académies. Le matériau comparatif examiné dans cet article conduit en ce sens à interroger les désignations ordinaires du métier d'enseignant en EPS (dont les énoncés a priori les plus « scientifiques » ne parviennent eux-mêmes pas toujours à bien se déprendre). Couplé à une interrogation sur les modalités de reproduction du groupe, il introduit alors, plus généralement, à une réflexion sur ce qui fait la spécificité de la position d'enseignant en EPS dans le système d'enseignement français pour une portion croissante de ses occupants : l'équation singulière (paradoxale ?) qui porte de « jeunes sportifs » plutôt bien nés et bons élèves à investir une discipline scolaire dépréciée et à mettre en avant la ressource à double-tranchant que constitue leur identité de « pédagogues ».
National audienceLe présent travail consiste à donner un aperçu global des ressources et des stratégies socio-professionnelles des différentes catégories de personnel enseignant des IREP et cherche à expliciter la position qui leur revient dans la distribution des tâches établie dans ces établissements au tout début de leur fonctionnement, au tournant des années 1920-1930. L’investigation sociohistorique se cantonne délibérément à cette courte période et à cette aire institutionnelle dans la mesure où l’on accède, à travers elles, à des pans encore très largement méconnus de l’histoire de l’éducation physique, mais aussi, et sans doute plus fondamentalement, en ce que les IREP concentrent alors un certain nombre d’enjeux « sportifs » et universitaires (en l’occurrence médico-sportifs) tout à la fois originaux et annonciateurs de l’évolution ultérieure des relations entre ces deux champs appelés à une grande expansion. On y saisit de fait un état important de ces relations avant qu’elles ne se remodèlent en profondeur et ne confèrent une nouvelle cohérence au monde de l’encadrement des activités physiques et sportives à partir de l’après-guerre puis, surtout, dans le courant des années 1960. Autant de changements qui engageront des dispositifs de certification de plus en plus raffinés avec des titres (garantis par l’État), et dont on ne peut véritablement rendre compte sans les rapporter à l’incessant travail de redéfinition sociale des compétences « exigibles » sur ce marché professionnel émergent
