Das Bauwerk quert die A 3 bei km 396,332 zwischen den Anschlussstellen Behringsdorf und Nürnberg-Nord. Der überführte Geh-und Radweg verbindet die neben der Autobahn liegenden Waldgebiete nördlich von Nürnberg miteinander. Das Bestandbauwerk aus dem Jahr 1979 ist als Einfeldträgerkette über zwei Felder mit Stützweiten von je 21,75 m ausgeführt. Der Überbau besteht aus Spannbetonfertigteilen mit Ortbetonergänzung, die auf Elastomerlagern gelagert sind. Die Widerlager sowie die Mittelstütze sind im anstehenden Sandstein flach gegründet. Aufgrund mehrerer Längsrisse im Hauptträger mit Rissweiten bis 0,4 mm und einer mangelhaften Abdichtung im Bereich der Fugen zwischen den Überbauten bzw. zwischen Überbau und Widerlager ist mit einer Schadensausbreitung zu rechnen. Aufgrund dessen wird von der Autobahn GmbH des Bundes Niederlassung Nordbayern (zum Zeitpunkt der Entwurfsplanung Autobahndirektion Nordbayern) ein wartungsarmer und dauerhafter Ersatzneubau angestrebt.
Im Stadtgebiet der Landeshauptstadt Magdeburg sichert der Strombrückenzug neben dem Nordbrückenzug die Verbindung der westlich und östlich der Elbe gelegenen Stadtteile. Der Strombrückenzug besteht derzeit aus der in den 1960er-Jahren errichteten Neuen Strombrücke, der Zollbrücke und der Anna-Ebert-Brücke. Das unmittelbare Umfeld des Planungsraums ist durch verschiedene Bau-und Kulturdenkmale sowie durch das FFH-Gebiet DE 3936-301 "Elbaue zwischen Saalemündung und Magdeburg" geprägt.
