Isabelle Stengers aime rappeler à ses interlocuteurs français qu'elle est belge : « J'essaie, dit-elle, de faire bafouiller le rapport un peu trop direct que les Français entretiennent avec l'universel. » La remarque, accompagnée d'un rire, est la variation d'un motif qui parcourt tout son travail : Isabelle Stengers demande avant tout qu'on baisse un peu de ton. Depuis la publication, en 1979, de La Nouvelle alliance, co-écrit avec le prix Nobel de chimie Ilya Prigogine, elle n'a cessé de combattre toutes les formes de disqualification péremptoire -des sciences entre elles, de savoirs canoniques vis-à-vis des savoirs dominés, des experts vis-à-vis des citoyens, etc. Aussi a-t-elle lutté sur deux fronts : en rappelant aux savoirs dominants les conditions matérielles et historiques de production des vérités qui sont les leurs ; en donnant de l'écho aux savoirs dominés, qu'ils soient issus de cultures traditionnelles -les sorciers -, qu'ils aient été écartés au profit d'autres pratiques -l'hypnose -, ou qu'ils fassent l'objet d'une élaboration collective -les usages de drogues. L'effet de liste donne une idée à la fois de l'intérêt et de la perplexité que suscitent chez nous les textes d'Isabelle Stengers. Intérêt pour une éthique politique qui refuse toute espèce d'arrogance ; pour une attention aux savoirs minorisés et aux mécanismes d'empowerment par lesquels ils s'insurgent ; pour un engagement politique à la fois constant et mobile, auprès des junkiebonden néerlandais, du Collectif sans ticket de Bruxelles ou des militants anti-OGM. Mais perplexité face au sentiment que tous les objets en viennent à s'équivaloir, pourvu qu'ils sentent le soufre : le pragmatisme à la hollandaise et le culturalisme de Tobie Nathan, le néo-paganisme américain et l'écologie politique, la contestation de l'expertise médicale par des groupes de malades du sida en Europe et la contestation des thérapies occidentales par des religieux en Afrique. Bref, peut-on généraliser une politique de l'hérésie ? Mais c'est la gratitude, pas l'aigreur, qui a donné à l'entretien qui suit, à l'occasion, l'allure du débat, voire du désaccord. Nous devions à notre interlocutrice de ne pas la traiter comme une autorité -pas par méfiance pour le savoir qu'elle propose, ni même par fidélité à celui dont nous venons (après tout, le risque de la généralisation pèse aussi sur la « politique des minorités » dont Vacarme cherche le fil), mais pour être à la hauteur de celui qu'elle appelle. La pensée d'Isabelle Stengers est rare en ce qu'elle accueille la divergence et s'expose à l'usage, non pas après coup, d'une manière mondaine, mais par son objet même, d'une manière plus risquée et plus belle. La politique comme politesse, en somme, plutôt que le contraire.On observe une sorte de constance dans votre travail : un effort de lecture politique des sciences, un intérêt pour les « hérétiques » contre les autorités du savoir...
