mRNA of IFN-λ1, IFN-λ2, and IFN-λ3 was expressed in gingival tissues of healthy participants and in patients with chronic or aggressive periodontitis. The highest level of IFN-λ1 was observed in patients with aggressive periodontitis (3.049 ± 9.793), whereas IFN-λ2 (4.322 ± 11.310) and IFN-λ3 (11.932 ± 27.479) were highest in patients with chronic periodontitis. The difference in mRNA expression of IFN-λ1 (P = 0.008) and IFN-λ3 (P = 0.043) among three groups was statistically significant CONCLUSION: Increased quantity of IFN-λs in patients with chronic and patients with aggressive periodontitis suggests a role in periodontitis. Variation in the expression of IFN-λ1 and IFN-λ3 in patients with periodontitis needs to be further evaluated. The mRNA expression of antiviral IFN-λs in gingival tissues might enhance our understanding related to viral pathogenesis of periodontal diseases.
AimTo evaluate the microtensile bond strength of teeth restored with packable composite after removing caries with three chemomechanical caries removal agents (Carisolv, Papacarie and Carie-care) and also to analyze its effect on chemical composition of dentin using energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis.DesignA total of 40 carious molars with 1 to 1.5 mm of remaining dentin were selected and divided into four groups of 20 each. Group I (control)—bur, group II—Carisolv, group III—Papacarie, group IV—Carie-care. A total of 15 samples from each group were restored with composite; 1 mm thick sections were made and were debonded under tensile load. Remaining five samples from each group were subjected to EDX for elemental analysis of dentin surface.ResultsNo statistically significant difference in the bond strength values and Ca/P ratio was observed between control group and three chemomechanical agents tested in the study.ConclusionNone of the chemomechanical agents tested in the study adversely affected the bond strength of composite resin to caries-affected dentin. Background:In the Indian system of medicine (ISM) Triphala is one of the oldest and longest used natural herbal remedy which consist of mixture of equal parts of the Embilica officinalis Gaertn. (Family- Euphorbiaceae), Terminalia Chebula Retz. (Family- Combretaceae) and Terminalia beleria [Gaertn.] Roxb. (Family- Combretaceae). Currently, Triphala is being extensively researched for its various therapeutic effects including its anti-caries, antioxidant, anti-collagenase and anti-microbial activities. This fruit extract is used in various forms in the treatment of periodontitis.Aim:The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical and microbiological benefits of routine scaling and root planing (SRP) with adjunctive use of Triphala (Hiora GA) as local drug delivery agent in the management of periodontitis.Materials and Methods:Thirteen patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis were included in the present study. The control sites received SRP alone and the test sites received SRP with locally delivered Triphala (Hiora GA). The clinical parameters were evaluated at baseline, 15 days and 1 month. The plaque samples were cultured anaerobically for the keystone-periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Prevotella intermedia. The Mann–Whitney U-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were performed to compare the results between the test and control groups.Results:Statistically significant improvement was observed in both groups. Intergroup comparison of prevalence of microorganisms also revealed a statistically significant difference (P = 0.0007) at 15 days and 1 month.Conclusion:Subgingivally delivered Triphala (Hiora GA) as an adjunct to SRP in the treatment of chronic periodontitis has shown anticipative results revealing slow and constant releasing property of Triphala.
Gingival recession is defined as displacement of the soft tissue margin apical to the cementoenamel junction. The esthetic demand together with reduction of root sensitivity and management of root caries or cervical abrasion are the main indications for root coverage. Available literature indicates that free gingival graft (FGG) is a reliable procedure for root coverage with a success rate ranging from 76 to 95.5%. In this case report, a 32-year-old female patient having Miller's Class III gingival recession in relation to 31 was treated using free gingival graft with satisfactory postoperative results. Telemedicine is the delivery of healthcare services, where distance is a basic factor, by all medical care experts utilizing information and communication technologies for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and infirmities. Telecommunications are used in doctor-patient interactions in telemedicine. It is a new way of delivering healthcare services across geographical boundaries, and it's being utilised to make healthcare services more accessible to those who don't have access to such services in their residential areas. The study was done to assess awareness and acceptance of teleconsultation among public. A total of 200 samples were selected for this study from Vaikom Taluk in Kottayam district. Convenient sampling procedure was used for this method. People who contacted doctors for their treatment during COVID-19 were included in the study. The participants were briefed about the study and informed consent was obtained from them. The questionnaire consisted of 10 questions. The questions were asked to assess awareness and acceptance of teleconsultation.The study concluded that most of the participants are aware about teleconsultation and accepted this technology as treatment procedure.
