The present score accurately discriminated the probability of death in children hospitalized with CAP, and it could be a useful tool to select candidates for admission to intensive care unit and for adjunctive therapy in clinical trials.
This study validated most of the clinical variables present in the current WHO guidelines as markers of severe disease and add additional variables that can help to predict the risk of progression to shock.
During the 2011 dengue outbreak, 123 children were admitted with a mean age of 11 ± 3 years. By the 2009 classification system, 119 cases (97%) were classified as dengue requiring intervention [89 patients (75%) with warning signs and 30 patients (25%) with severe signs], whereas by the old system 67 patients (54%) were classified as dengue requiring intervention (P < 0.001). Further, by the 1997 classification, only 13 patients (10%) were classified as dengue hemorrhagic fever III/IV (severe cases), whereas with the 2009 classification 30 patients (24%) were considered as having severe dengue infection (P < 0.05) CONCLUSIONS:: This study confirms that the 2009 WHO dengue classification provides better detection of severe cases of dengue than the earlier 1997 WHO dengue system.
Introduction: The Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectology (SLIPE for its acronym in Spanish) is working hard to contribute with strategic actions to prevent the recurrence of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases and to prevent the reduction of vaccine coverage in the region of the Americas. Areas covered: On Friday, September 25th, a Latin American forum of experts on immunization services during the COVID-19 pandemic was held through Webex platform. Issues such as: the imminent risk of occurrence and outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, the importance of epidemiological surveillance and the vaccination campaign challenges, in the context of a pandemic were discussed. Expert opinion: Vaccination campaigns should no longer be postponed or delayed; instead, they must be reactivated; governments, scientific societies, and physicians must promote vaccination programs to avoid outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. On the eve of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, it is necessary to insist on the availability of sufficient doses to avoid dose shortages in disadvantaged areas of the region.
Background: Lassa fever is a potentially fatal viral illness associated with much misery, panic and fear in endemic areas such that health workers sometimes abandoned their patients to relations during outbreaks with negative impact on Public health. The study was designed to assess the perception of stigma and experience of discrimination among family caregivers of Lassa fever patients. Methods & Materials: Two focus group discussions(FGDs) consisting of seven and eight each were held with caregivers of Lassa fever patients admitted to the isolation ward of the Institute of Lassa fever research and control,
