How are we to interpret the apparent conflict between Helen and Menelaus that arises in Odyssey, IV, 219-289, when they successively recount stories of Odysseus’ exploit in Troy ? We suggest that what is at stake in this passage is not only the content of those tales but also the control of narration. Helen usurps here an unjustified power over narration. In his response, Menelaus corrects this abuse of narrative authority.
