Aims:The aim of this study was to evaluate the reduction of Enterococcus faecalis in curved root canals after various sizes and tapers of the canal preparation.Materials and Methods:Mandibular first molars (n = 103) with curved mesiobuccal canals were divided into one control (n = 5) and 7 experimental (n = 14) groups, were inoculated with E. faecalis (ATTC 29212) and prepared with the following RaCe files (FKG Dentaire) as master apical file: Groups: 25.04, 25.06, 30.04, 30.06, 35.04, 35.06 and 40.06. All the experimental groups were irrigated with 2 mL of 1% sodium hypochlorite during instrumentation and finally rinsed with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) (2 mL) followed by 5.25% NaOCl (2 mL) and sterile distilled water. Colony counting was performed after incubation.Statistical Analysis Used:Resulting data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test, (P < 0.05).Results and Conclusions:All the experimental groups showed significant bacterial reduction (P < 0.001). Although the greater the size/taper or both led to more decreased amount of bacteria, differences between the groups with the identical size and different tapers, and among the groups with the same taper and different sizes were not significant. Based on this study, 25.04 along with using 2 mL of 1% NaOCl during instrumentation, and using 17% EDTA and 5.25% NaOCl as final rinse successively after the termination of preparation, can effectively reduce intra-canal bacteria and preserve root structure.
Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a common tumor-like growth observed in response to local irritation, trauma, or hormonal disturbances. It is among the frequently encountered oral lesions occurring at the gingiva. Surgical excision and removal of the underlying cause is the preferred method of treatment. Scalpel, cryosurgery, and laser are used in order to remove this lesion. Currently, different lasers are used for the surgery of PG, which include Carbon dioxide; Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet; Diode; Erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet; and Erbium, chromium-doped yttrium, scandium, gallium and garnet. This case report aims to briefly review clinical and radiographic findings of PG along with a detailed discussion on its management through a 980-nm diode laser.
Intrusive luxation often results in severe damage to the tooth, periodontium, and pulp tissue. Furthermore, treatment outcome is often unpredictable due to the presence of numerous injury-related variables affecting the treatment option and prognosis. The current report presents the case of a 14-year-old boy with a 9.0 mm intruded permanent right maxillary central incisor with a closed apex which was treated by orthodontic repositioning and root canal treatment with a favorable prognosis. At the last follow-up visit (30 months after the first treatment session), the tooth was asymptomatic, and radiographic examination showed normal periapical and periodontal appearance.
Dentigerous cyst which is the most common developmental cyst of the jaw forms around the crown of an unerupted or supernumerary tooth. This case report demonstrates the treatment of a large inflammatory dentigerous cyst caused by an abnormal supernumerary tooth and the subsequent irreversible pulpitis affecting the four maxillary teeth.
Background and Objectives: A human is a social being and needs social cohesion, support, and understanding. The relationship between the dentist and patient is a specific example of social support and empathy. The patient is also an example of social support. An empathetic dentistpatient relationship can effectively improve the physical, psychological, and social wellbeing of the patient. In this relationship, a physician can make a better diagnosis and deliver a more satisfactory treatment outcome. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate empathy and its related factors in dental students of Birjand University of Medical Sciences, Birjand City, Iran, in 2020. Methods: The study population consisted of all students of clinical dentistry. After obtaining informed consent from the students, Jefferson’s questionnaire was distributed among them. Students’ demographic information was asked in the questionnaire. The obtained data were analyzed by ANOVA and the independent t test at the significant level of 0.05. Results: A total of 78 (42.3% male and 57.7% female) dental students participated in this study. Their Mean±SD score of empathy was 57±5.57. The mean empathy score was significantly higher in females than males (P=0.04). The mean score of empathy was significantly higher in students who were more interested in their field (P=0.03). The mean score of empathy for students was not significantly different in terms of study semester (P=0.06), marital status (P=0.95), communication skills (P=0.16), and mother’s (P=0.11), and father’s (P=0.92) education. Conclusion: The mean score of empathy was significantly higher in females and students who were more interested in their field.
