Results of the present study show that patients suffering from chronic periodontitis have a lower number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin compared to healthy controls. Thus, based on these results it can be concluded that, like any other chronic condition, chronic periodontitis can lead to anemia.
The bactericidal effect of the diode laser was clearly evident by greater reduction of CFU of obligate anaerobes in the test group than in the control group.
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by microbial infection that leads to destruction of supporting tissues of the teeth. The periodontal tissue destruction is a result of both microbial activity as well as host response. The best chance for clinical improvement may come from implementing complementary treatment strategies that target different aspects of the periodontal balance. Host response modulation, in combination with conventional treatment, offers to restore the balance between health and disease progression in the direction of a healing response. Various host modulatory therapies (HMT) have been developed or proposed to block pathways responsible for periodontal tissue break down. The newer drugs like bortezomib, infliximb, etanercept, vasoactive intestinal peptide, nitric oxide synthase inhibitors and denosumab are developed as a result of better understanding of pathogenesis of inflammatory tissue destruction and may represent the future of periodontal therapy. This review article focuses on the potential systemic host modulatory agents that target cell signalling pathways, cytokines and enzymes.
Ridge split procedures are commonly performed for horizontal augmentation of narrow ridges which would otherwise preclude implant placement. A 47-year-old patient with bilaterally edentulous posterior mandibular ridges was treated in the Department of Periodontology and Implantology, M.A. Rangoonwala College of Dental Sciences and Research Centre, employing a "staged ridge split" technique. In this technique, a simple corticotomy at the crestal, apical, and lateral aspects of the buccal cortical plate of the mandible was performed. Following this, a month later, the ridge was expanded and bone graft OssiFi containing biphasic beta-tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyappatite was placed to maintain the gap between the cortices. Thereafter, implants were placed 3 months later. A successful prosthetic rehabilitation was done following a healing phase of 3 months. This approach leads to restoration of function with a predictable outcome and minimal risk of cortical plate fracture during the ridge expansion process.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
