A continuous microreaction process was set up to analyze and improve the "green" synthesis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) based oil the HCl-catalyzed dehydration of fructose in pure aqueous solutions. The process conditions were deliberately shifted to high temperatures and pressures (185 degrees C, 17 bar) and combined with a reduced reaction time of only 1 min to avoid extensive rehydration of the product. 5-HMF was obtained with 75 % selectivity and 54 % yield at 71 % fructose conversion. In comparison to published data, a 24 % increase in selectivity and a 21 % increase in conversion could be achieved. Moreover, by adding organic co-solvents and extraction agents to the reaction system, both 5-HMF selectivity and yield could be further enhanced to 85 and 82 %, respectively. However, the use of additional organic solvents cannot be considered as a green process anymore
Two different concepts for the modularization and automation of microreaction systems are described. The modular microreaction system FAMOS was developed on the basis of a functional toolkit concept for laboratory applications of microreaction technology. Microstructured reaction modules with suitable fluidic, analytical and electronic interfaces were designed which allow the realization of even multi-stage microchemical processes like the sulfonation of toluene under thermally controlled conditions over the entire process. The automated microreaction system AuMlRes was developed to enable an active regulation of process parameters via a process control system to perform parameter screenings for the identification of process optima. Integrated microstructured flow-through sensors and analytical interfaces were developed for the monitoring of relevant process parameters. Sampling devices for chromatographic analysis and inline Raman spectroscopy were integrated into the micoreaction system to gather relevant analytical information about the considered chemical process. By applying chemometric models, a qualitative and quantitative realtime monitoring of microchemical processes was established, as was demonstrated for different nitration reactions.
Customized monodisperse microparticles and microcapsules can be produced by combining microfluidic droplet generation with subsequent particle solidification. Established microfluidic devices for droplet formation like flow‐focusing structures or T‐junctions provide high reproducibility and controllability, but are often limited in terms of throughput or variability. A higher throughput by means of simple numbering‐up can be achieved by applying alternative droplet formation mechanisms like step emulsification. Using laser‐ablated glass reactors designed in‐house, comprehensive studies with varied step geometry and process parameters were performed in order to provide fundamental data for general calculation methods allowing the fast design of customized microfluidic droplet generators.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
