La simulación en tiempo real de sistemas eléctricos de potencia es una herramienta tecnológica que permite simular el comportamiento de las variables eléctricas y obtener resultados en el mismo período de tiempo en el que evolucionaría el fenómeno eléctrico que ocurre en el sistema de potencia real. Esto permite realizar estudios especializados que involucren la puesta en sincronismo de las simulaciones digitales con elementos reales del sistema. El presente artículo presenta una descripción conceptual de la simulación en tiempo real y describe las principales características del proyecto de implementación de un laboratorio de simulación en tiempo real que llevan a cabo CENACE y ESPOL, incluyendo algunos de los desafíos esperados en su operación futura.
