El artículo tiene como objetivo caracterizar los principales conflictos socios ambientales del Caribe costarricense en el periodo 2006-2012. Este proceso se va a presentar a partir de una tensión principal, entre el Estado y los pobladores locales, quienes mantienen varias disputas alrededor de una serie de políticas que modifican las formas de tenencia de la tierra, así como, la falta de regulaciones en los sistemas de monocultivo de la piña y el banano.
En este artículo se estudia la manifestación política llamada A mis hijos los educo yo, realizada en San José, Costa Rica, en el año 2017. Esta protesta social es una muestra de las distintas expresiones del conservadurismo en oposición a las políticas de educación sexual, a cargo del Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP) del Gobierno de Costa Rica. Asimismo, esta manifestación da cuenta de las discusiones posicionadas, posteriormente, durante la campaña electoral del 2017-2018. En el artículo se estudia el contexto y las principales características de esta manifestación.
En el año 2007, se realizó el referendo sobre el TLC en Costa Rica. Ha sido una de las coyunturas sociales y políticas más conflictivas de la historia costarricense reciente. Debido a esto, se analizó la percepción de la población costarricense sobre este tratado, tras diez años de su aprobación. Entre los principales resultados, se encuentra que es un tema que aún polariza la opinión pública costarricense; asimismo, el criterio mayoritario de la población es que este tratado comercial ha beneficiado a grandes empresarios nacionales y extranjeros, y ha tenido poco o ningún beneficio para los consumidores y pequeños empresarios. Además, la población percibe que la discusión académica fue la que tuvo mayor influencia a la hora de decidir su voto.
Las discusiones acerca del populismo evidencian que no es un fenómeno de la política que se origina en un país concreto ni tampoco que las democracias más consolidadas estén exentas de su presencia, pese a que lo consideran como un invitado incómodo. Los ejercicios de comparación entre países, casos y periodos distintos dan cuenta de que se pueden establecer elementos comunes en el sistema político, a manera de causas, las cuales explicarían la emergencia de líderes, partidos y expresiones del populismo. En este artículo, se contrastan los presidentes Daniel Ortega de Nicaragua, Nayib Bukele de El Salvador y el exmandatario Rafael Correa de Ecuador con la finalidad de explicar el contexto de su aparición en el sistema político de sus países.
En este artículo se analiza la construcción mediática de los sindicatos, durante la huelga contra el Plan Fiscal, discutido y aprobado en Costa Rica, durante el segundo semestre del año 2018. En particular, se estudia la construcción mediática de la figura del sindicato, a partir del periódico de circulación nacional La Nación. Para ello, se analizan los titulares y los mecanismos de representación de los actores movilizados y los no movilizados en las publicaciones periodísticas.
