Rev. Nutr., Campinas, 26 (6) A B S T R A C T ObjectiveTo present a Diet Quality Index proper for dietary intake studies of Brazilian adults. MethodsA diet quality index to analyze the incorporation of healthy food choices was associated with a digital food guide. This index includes moderation components, destined to indicate foods that may represent a risk when in excess, and adequacy components that include sources of nutrients and bioactive compounds in order to help individuals meet their nutritional requirements. The diet quality index-digital food guide performance was measured by determining its psychometric properties, namely content and construct validity, as well as internal consistency. ResultsThe moderation and adequacy components correlated weakly with dietary energy (-0.16 to 0.09). The strongest correlation (0.52) occurred between the component 'sugars and sweets' and the total score. The Cronbach's coefficient alpha for reliability was 0.36. ConclusionGiven that diet quality is a complex and multidimensional construct, the Diet Quality Index-Digital Food Guide, whose validity is comparable to those of other indices, is a useful resource for Brazilian dietary studies. However, new studies can provide additional information to improve its reliability.

Palavras AbstractNoncommunicable chronic diseases in 2010, accounted for over 18 million deaths worldwide; in 2014, the prevalence of overweight represented 2.1 billion. In Brazil, overweight affects 51% of the population. Ultra-processed foods as sandwich cookies, pack snacks, soft drinks and fast food, collaborate to this epidemic by presenting combinations of ingredients that make them highly palatable (sugar, salt, fat and chemical additives) and damage mechanisms of control of appetite. The main factors that contributed to the increase in the consumption of these foods were the strengthening of the economy, the increase in purchasing power, marketing campaigns, as well as the comfort, convenience and its lower cost. The food industry has used opinion formation strategies, such as exposure in the media with massive campaigns to promote these products and initiatives focused on health professionals through sponsorship of scientific events and non-governmental organizations. Conflicts of interest in scientific production are increasing and analysis of studies funded by industry has shown that the outcomes are favorable to the study sponsor. This trial aimed to discuss the influence of the food industry in the increased consumption of ultra-processed food and the effects on health of the Brazilian population. Thus, ther may be a contribution to the process in the transformation of practices and principles, as well as an extension of this discussion with transparent and fair discussion, keeping the interest of the Brazilian population first.

Monitoring and assessing dietary intake may favor the promotion of healthy choices and the indexes that assess the quality of the diet contribute to this purpose. The Diet Quality Index associated with the Digital Food Guide (DQI-DFG) was developed from guidelines of the School of Public Health at Harvard University, adjusted for the Brazilian food habits. Based on new studies on prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases, the objective of this study was to improve and validate the DQI-DFG for a second version. The following psychometric properties were used: (a) content validation: consensus on healthy eating and DQI among experts; (b) construct validation: enhancement of a reference diet to determine recommended serving sizes and consumption ranges; correlation between each group score and energy value; comparative analyses between menu assessment by experts and DQI-DGF results to confirm the score criterion; (c) reliability: agreement between the result shown by the evaluators and the result presented by DQI-DFG; correlation between each food group score and total DQI score to understand the relationship between these variables. The energetic values do not influence the DQI score. There is a high correlation between the score attributed by experts and the result of DQI-DFG (r = 0.78 until r = 0.97). The Index components have a balanced score of influence in its final result (r = 0.49 until r = 0.10). Consensus result performed among experts legitimates the concepts that justify DQI-DFG. There was an agreement between menu quality evaluation by experts and the results shown by DQI-DFG.
