The aim of the present study was to investigate the sequence of shell bone formation in the embryos of the Pleurodira, Podocnemis unifilis. Their bones and cartilage were collected and cleared before staining. The shell was also examined by obtaining a series of histological slices. All the bony elements of the plastron have independent ossification centers, which subsequently join together and retain two fontanelles until the period of hatching. This turtle has a mesoplastra, which is characteristic of the Podocnemididae. The carapace begins to form concurrently with the ossification of the ribs at the beginning of stage 20. All the plates, except the suprapygal, initiate ossification during the embryonic period. The main purpose of the histological investigation was to highlight the relationship between the formation of the carapace and ribs with that of the neural plates. Em relação à perda da reação postural de endireitamento os cinco exemplares perderam essa capacidade em 15 minutos após aplicação do fármaco, e o retorno deu-se em média aos 176,66 + 45,09 em dois animais e os 295 + 8,66 minutos em três. Não houve variação na freqüência cardíaca entre os animais nos 300 minutos de observação e todos os protocolos foram seguros, uma vez que não ocorreram óbitos. A associação proposta promoveu analgesia, relaxamento muscular e anestesia nas serpentes do gênero Boa.

Caiman yacare embryos were collected and subjected to the bone cleared and Alizarin staining to analyze the ontogenic patterns of the skeletal ossification of the pelvic girdle and members. Ossification of C. yacare pelvis begins at 36 days of incubation. The femur, tibia and fibula present simultaneous stain retention at 30 days. It has four tarsal bones, the calcaneus, the talus, distal III and distal IV. Their ossification starts with the calcaneus from the 40th day of incubation, followed by the talus. At 54 days, the distal tarsal IV is conspicuous, as is the outline of the distal III. Each foot has five metatarsi (MT) and 13 phalanges (phalangeal formula 2:3:4:4). Ossification of the metatarsi begins at 36 days and follows the sequence MTI=MTII=MTIII=MTIV>MTV. The first phalanges begin the ossification process on the 36th day and continue up to the last day of incubation. The sequence of ossification of the proximal phalanges is PPI=PPII=PPIII>PPIV, while that of the medial phalanges is MPII> MPpIII>MDpIII>MPpIV>MDpIV and that of the distal phalanges is DPI>DPII>DPIII>DPIV, and the ontogenic pattern of the bones of the pelvic girdle and members of C. yacare differs from that of other reptiles, albeit with a few similarities.

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of midazolam in Boa constrictor. We used 20 redtail boas, divided into two groups of ten animals each. Group 1 (G1) received 1 mg/kg of midazolam and group 2 (G2) 2 mg/kg, by intracelomic injection. The specimens of G1 presented reduction of head tone, muscle tone, manipulation, and locomotion for 233.50 ± 71.34 minutes and the representatives of G2 for 328.50 ± 125.35 minutes. No redtail boa belonging to both G1 and G2 presented absence of postural righting reflex or achieved analgesia. However, all specimens tested showed intense muscle relaxation and difficulty to move in. The turnaround time to pre-sedation conditions were 279 ± 73.55 minutes for G1 and 372 ± 142.27 minutes for G2. There were no statistical differences between evaluations of heart and respiratory rates in both groups tested. We concluded, therefore, in redtail boa, midazolam at the dosage of 1 mg/kg causes the same effect as 2 mg/kg, but with shorter recovery time, and it can be used to contain Boa constrictor or in associations aimed at an effective muscle relaxation. Utilizaram-se 20 jiboias, divididas em dois grupos. O grupo 1 (G1), composto por dez animais, recebeu 1 mg/kg de midazolam e o grupo 2 (G2), também com dez animais, 2 mg/kg, pela via intracelomática. Os animais do G1 apresentaram déficit de tônus da cabeça, tônus muscular, manipulação e locomoção por 3,89 ± 1,18 horas e os representantes do G2 por 5,47 ± 2,08 horas. Nenhuma jiboia, em ambos os grupos, manifestou ausência de reação postural de endireitamento ou alcançaram sedação profunda; entretanto, observou-se redução da agressividade, intenso relaxamento muscular e uma dificuldade de serpentear em todos os exemplares. O tempo de retorno às condições pré-sedativas foi de 4,65 ± 1,22 horas para o G1 e de 6,2 ± 2,37 horas para o G2. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas nas avaliações da frequência cardíaca e respiratória entre os grupos. Concluiu-se assim que 1 mg/kg de midazolam provoca nas jiboias o mesmo efeito que 2 mg/kg, porém na menor dose o tempo de recuperação é menor, podendo ser utilizado para a contenção farmacológica de Boa constrictor, ou em associações que visem um efetivo relaxamento muscular.

Um exemplar adulto de Boa constrictor com histórico de atropelamento foi atendido no Hospital Veterinário. Exames clínico e radiográfico identificaram a presença de uma luxação no terço médio da coluna vertebral. O paciente foi submetido à estabilização cirúrgica da lesão, em que se avaliou a eficácia de uma variação da técnica de fixação espinhal segmentar modificada. O segmento foi estabilizado através da fixação e placas plásticas sob forma de hemicerclagem nos corpos vertebrais, com auxílio de fio de náilon n. 0 e a síntese tecidual finalizou o procedimento. No pós-operatório, instituiu-se a antibioticoterapia, curativos locais diários e restrição de espaço até a cicatrização total do ferimento. A variação da técnica mostrou ser eficaz no realinhamento e estabilização anatômica da luxação do segmento vertebral para a serpente em questão.

ResumoObjetivou-se estudar a técnica de abordagem cirúrgica da articulação coxofemoral de ouriço-cacheiro (Coendou prehensilis), utilizando quatro exemplares adultos que foram encaminhados ao Laboratório de Ensino e Pesquisa em Animais Silvestres. Uma incisão de pele sobre o trocânter maior do fêmur, ao longo da borda cranial do músculo bíceps femoral, a fim de liberar o músculo tensor da fáscia lata com sua borda no glúteo médio foi a técnica de escolha. As margens cutâneas foram divulsionadas e afastadas. A técnica mostrou-se efetiva para o animal em questão.Palavras-chave: Anatomia, membro pélvico, luxação

The objective was to study the technique of surgical approach to the hip joint of hedgehog (Coendou prehensilis) using four adult specimens that were sent to the Laboratory for Teaching and Research on Wild Animals. A skin incision over the greater trochanter, along the cranial border of the biceps femoris muscle in order to release the muscle tensor fascia lata with its edge in the gluteus medius was the technique of choice. The skin margins were divulsed and remote. The technique proved effective for the animal in question.
