BackgroundThe worldwide incidence of cutaneous melanoma (CM) has been continuously increasing over the last decades. Primary and secondary prevention, with attention to risk factors and early diagnosis, remain the cornerstone for reducing the burden of cutaneous melanoma. Detailed information with respect to clinical and pathological data on cutaneous melanoma is scarce in Brazil.ObjectiveThe purpose of our study was to analyze epidemiological and pathological characteristics of primary cutaneous melanoma in Joinville, southern Brazil.MethodsObservational, cross-sectional, retrospective study in which 893 reports of primary cutaneous melanoma from the local population were analyzed in the period 2003-2014. The study was approved by the local Ethics and Research Committee.ResultsWe observed a female predominance of cutaneous melanoma (56.3%). The age standardized incidence rate of primary cutaneous melanoma for the world population in the period 2003-06 was 11.8 per 100,000 population (CI 95%, 10.3-13.4), and 17.5 (CI 95%, 15.7-19.3) in 2011-14, revealing a significant increase of 48.3% (p < 0,05). Six and a half percent of patients had multiple cutaneous melanomas (mean 2.2 years and a maximum of 10.0 years between diagnoses). We observed significant differences between the location head/neck and cutaneous melanoma in situ, lower limb with Breslow depth S III and upper limb with Breslow depth S I. The comparison of the characteristics of cutaneous melanoma in the elderly and non-elderly (< 60 years old) showed significant differences with respect to all the variables studied.Study limitationsUsing secondary data source.ConclusionJoinville has high incidence coefficients for Brazilian standards, showing an increase in the incidence of cutaneous melanoma.
Fruit yield and quality of melon cultivated in greenhouse with carbon dioxide and potassium applications through irrigation water. The aim of this work was to study the effect of different doses of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and potassium (K 2 O), applied through drip irrigation, at the yield and quality of cantaloupe melon (Cucumis melo L.), hybrid Bônus II, cultivated in greenhouse. 19-day seedlings were transplanted to beds. They were spaced out 1.1 m x 0.3 m apart from each other and vertically directed up to 2.0 m of height. The treatments resulted from combinations of four K 2 O doses and four CO 2 doses applied during the crop. K 2 O irrigation and application were carried out during four days. CO 2 irrigation and application were carried out during two days. 45 CO 2 irrigation, 33 CO 2 applications and 19 K 2 O applications were totalized. Results showed that (a) based on a quadratic relation, the number of melon marketable fruits had a significant increase when CO 2 and K 2 O doses were also increased; (b) there was no significant effect of CO 2 on the average fruit weight. However, there was a significant quadratic effect for K 2 O; (c) based on a quadratic relation, when there was an increase of CO 2 and K 2 O doses, the total and commercial melon yield also increased; (d) CO 2 and K 2 O application through irrigation incr...
AbstractFor presenting more commercial value, the net melon (Cucumis melo L. var reticulatus Naud.) has been an option of greenhouse planting for the horticulturists. This work was carried out in Piracicaba, Brazil with the aim of evaluating the nutrient uptake from this melon cultivated in greenhouse. To obtain the nutrients accumulation in the different stages of the plant development, plants were collected in the transplant day (seedling), in the vegetative stage, in the beginning of the flowering stage, in the beginning and in the middle of fruit production period and in the harvest period. It was verified that the greatest increase of nutrient uptake happened between the beginning of the flowering and the beginning of the fruit production. The greatest dry matter accumulation happened between the beginning of the fruit production and the middle of fruit production period. The decrescent order of nutrients accumulated in the above ground part of the plant was: potassium > nitrogen > calcium > magnesium > sulphur > phosphorus > iron > manganese > zinc > copper ~ boron.

BackgroundCutaneous melanoma accounts for up to 80% of deaths caused by skin cancer. Diagnostic suspicion and access to medical care and early intervention in suspected cases is vital to the patient’s prognosis.ObjectivesTo compare demographic and histopathological characteristics of primary cutaneous melanoma diagnosed in the public healthcare system (Sistema Único de Saúde SUS) and the private system in Joinville, Santa Catarina State, Brazil.MethodsThis cross-sectional retrospective study analyzed primary cutaneous melanoma cases recorded from 2003 to 2014 in the resident population of Joinville. Ethical approval was obtained from the local Research Ethics Committee.Results893 cases of primary cutaneous melanoma were identified. Patients in the private system were mostly younger, while there were more elderly patients in the public healthcare system (p <0.001). There was no statistically significant association between type of care (public/private) and gender or presence of multiple primary cutaneous melanomas. Histological diagnosis of superficial spreading melanoma was more common in patients treated in private healthcare, while nodular melanoma was more frequent in patients in the public healthcare system (p <0.001). Mean Breslow depth in patients treated in private healthcare was 1.35mm, compared to 2.72mm in the public system (p <0.001).Study limitationsThis was a retrospective study using secondary databases.Conclusionsthin cutaneous melanoma (in situ cutaneous melanoma and Breslow T1) showed the strongest association with the private healthcare system, while thick cutaneous melanoma was more frequent in the public system (Breslow category T3 and T4) (p <0.001).
