Maternal anemia is a major global public health problem, and although widely discussed, there are few studies investigating the condition in pregnant women. In this article, issues related to the diagnosis, biological mechanism and prevalence of maternal anemia. In addition, iron deficiency anemia will be considered a proxy for maternal anemia. In previous studies, the concepts of maternal anemia have been controversial. It is also noted that isolated actions are not sufficient to combat this disease, and policies to address the primary causes of the associated nutritional deficiencies are necessary. Two reviewers selected articles by reading titles and abstracts. During the process of selecting the articles the researchers were not aware of the decisions made by their colleague. After that, full text articles were assessed for eligibility. Discordant events were resolved by consensus. Data extractionData extraction was performed independently by two researchars (ACMGF and RBS) and discordant events resolved by consensus. We used a standardized electronic spreadsheet to extract the following information: author's name, year of publication, year of data collection and geographic region, study design, sample size, anemia diagnosis criteria, frequency of maternal anemia and iron deficiency anemia. Authors were contacted for additional information considered important for this review.
In the context of the modern agriculture, pest control is important in order to increase productivity in maize (Zea mays L.). However, this control should be done rationally, prioritising environmentally safer methods such as biological control. This paper aims to report the occurrence of Dolichozele koebelei Viereck, 1911 (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae collected in maize subjected to different cropping systems. The experiment was conducted at the Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Milho e Sorgo (CNPMS) in Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, using organic and conventional production. Ten plants were sampled from each of the 24 plots and for each production system, three times a week during the entire cycle of maize (variety BR 106). In the laboratory, larvae were distributed in individual rearing containers with artificial diet until the end of the biological cycle. An increased number of S. frugiperda larvae was observed in organic single crop maize; hence a higher percentage of S. frugiperda larvae parasitised by Hymenoptera and Diptera also occurred in the maize under this production system. Dolichozele koebelei had not yet been described in association with larvae of S. frugiperda. The percentage of parasitism of S. frugiperda larvae was high in both experiments, indicating the importance of natural control agents in reducing the population density of S. frugiperda, and especially the importance of an appropriate crop management.Keywords: agroecosystem, biological control, fall armyworm, parasitoid, Macrocentrinae. This experiment aimed at evaluating the effect of the dietary inclusion of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee on the performance and internal and external egg quality of commercial layers. One hundred and twenty 25-week-old Hy-line Brown layers, with 1575 ± 91 average body weight, were distributed according to a completely randomized experimental design with three treatments (control, 1.2% caffeinated coffee, or 1.2% decaffeinated coffee) of five replicates of eight birds each. The inclusion of 1.2% caffeinated coffee was calculated to supply 6mg caffeine per kg body weight, which is considered a moderate dose. The applied treatments did not influence (p>0.05) feed intake, egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed conversion ratio, Haugh units, yolk color or albumen and yolk percentages. The eggs of hens fed 1.2% caffeinated coffee presented lower (p<0.05) eggshell thickness and egg specific density. The eggs of layers fed 1.2% caffeinated coffee tended (p=0.0637) to present lower eggshell percentage. It was concluded that feeding caffeinated coffee to commercial layers does not affect their performance or internal egg quality; however, eggshell quality is impaired.
Introduction: The metabolic syndrome is characterized by multiple disorders, and the in periodontitis, inflammation occurs in the tissues supporting the tooth, where in this process it is believed that the migration of oral bacteria and byproducts to the circulatory system occurs, with a systemic spread of inflammatory mediators. This study aims to verify the effect of periodontitis on the occurrence of the metabolic syndrome. Method: Cross-sectional study with 90 users of the Family Health Unit from Vale do Cambonas in Salvador-BA. Questionnaires were applied, physical / anthropometric and dental evaluation were performed, record of the results of laboratory tests was registered and evaluation of medical records. Data analysis: A bivariate and stratified analysis was performed, obtaining means and standard deviation for continuous variables, absolute and relative frequency for all variables, and multiple conditional logistic regression was performed to obtain the final model adjusted for potential confounders. Results: In the final sample 46,67% of participants had metabolic syndrome according NECP-ATP III criterion and 30, 00% had periodontitis. From those, 20.00% had severe periodontitis, 10% moderate periodontitis and none with mild periodontitis, according to the criterion proposed by Gomes-Filho et al. (2018). There was statistical significance in the association between periodontitis and MetS (ORcrude = 2.58, 95% CI [1.02 - 6.55]) / (ORadjusted = 2.63, 95% CI [1.01 - 6.80]) and severe periodontitis and MetS (ORcrude = 3.86, 95% CI [1.24 - 11.98]) / (ORadjusted = 4.14, 95% CI [1.29-13.29]). Conclusion: The main findings of this study indicate a positive association between periodontitis and metabolic syndrome, with a higher effect when the exposure was severe periodontitis.
