Cet article aborde, par le biais d'une étude de cas, l'organisation sociale et les redistributions induites par l'un des secteurs les plus importants de l'économie sénégalaise, mais aussi plus généralement par les économies dites « informelles ». Dans la gare routière de Pompiers, au Sénégal, durant l'ensemble des étapes séparant l'arrivée du chauffeur de son départ de la gare, ce dernier est quasi entièrement dépossédé de son véhicule au profit des « coxeurs ». L'activité des coxeurs englobe les différentes manoeuvres pour positionner les voitures dans la gare, l'encaissement des pass donnant le droit aux voyageurs d'embarquer, le chargement des colis ou bagages sur le toit des véhicules. La description du travail des coxeurs laisse apparaître un dispositif de redistribution fondé tout à la fois sur des représentations spatiales et hiérarchiques, ainsi que sur une compétition maîtrisée.
L’article porte sur le rapport entretenu par le groupe professionnel des chauffeurs de transport de passagers au permis de conduire au Sénégal. Il revient d’abord sur les évènements ayant abouti à l’instauration d’une filière de passage quasi exclusivement dédiée à ce groupe social. Il décrit ensuite certaines des pratiques des représentants de la profession visant à protéger le document lors des contrôles routiers. Enfin, il détaille le rôle joué par le document dans la scansion de la carrière des chauffeurs. L’ensemble esquisse les contours d’un ensemble d’usages et de représentations donnant au document une signification dépassant sa fonction sociale juridique initiale. Il met alors en lumière la relativité sociale des pratiques et des imaginaires de l’État.
