In this paper, we examine the most important features of human skin tactile properties with special emphasis on the characteristics which are vital in the design of artificial systems. Contrary to the visual and auditory senses, the touch signal is not a well-defined quantity. As a result, the researchers of this field are still dealing with the basics of collecting the most relevant data. Following this, mimicking the sense of touch by producing artificial tactile skin is a challenging process. Although the sense of touch is widely distributed all over the human body, the tactile perception in the human hand is of great importance in terms of surgical and medical robotics applications. In this study, the role of various mechanoreceptors in the human hand, such as, RA, SA I, SA II, and PC units are discussed in relation to the stimuli like force, position, softness, and surface texture. Taking human hand as a suitable tactile model, the necessary engineering features of an artificial tactile sensor, such as, spatial and temporal resolutions, force sensitivity, and linearity, are being reviewed. In this work, we also report on the current and possible future applications of tactile sensors in various surgical procedures.

In the field of tissue engineering there is always a need for new engineered polymeric biomaterials which have ideal properties and functional customization. Unfortunately the demands for many biomedical applications need a set of properties that no polymers can fulfill. One method to satisfy these demands and providing desirable new biomaterials is by mixing two or more polymers. In this work, random nanofibrous blends of poly (e-caprolactone) (PCL) and polyglycolic acid (PGA) with various PCL/PGA compositions (100/0, 80/20, 65/35, 50/50, and 0/100) were fabricated by electrospinning method and characterized for soft-tissue engineering applications. Physical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties of PCL/PGA blend nanofibers were measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), porosimetry, contact angle measurement, water uptake, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FT-IR), Xray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and tensile measurements. Morphological characterization showed that the addition of PGA to PCL results in an increase in the average diameter of the nanofibers. According to these results, when the amount of PGA in the blend solution increased, the hydrophilicity and water uptake of the nanofibrous scaffolds increased concurrently, approaching those of PGA nanofibers. Differential scanning calorimetric studies showed that the PCL and PGA were miscible in the nanofibrous structure and the mechanical characterization under dry conditions showed that increasing PGA content results in a tremendous increase in the mechanical properties. In conclusion, the random nanofibrous PCL/PGA scaffold used in this study constitutes a promising material for soft-tissue engineering.

In this study, central composite design (CCD) was used to develop predictive models to optimize operating conditions of plasma surface modification. It was concluded that out of the two process variables, power and duration of plasma exposure, the latter was significantly affecting the surface energy (γ(s) ), chemistry, and topography of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-poly(carbonate-urea)urethane (POSS-PCU) films. On the basis of experimental data, CCD was used to model the γ(s) using a quadratic modeling of the process variables to achieve optimum surface energy to improve the interaction between endothelial cells (ECs). It was found that optimal water θ for EC adhesion and retention, which was reported 55° from supporting literature (equivalent to γ(s) = 51 mN/m), was easily achievable using the following experimental conditions: (1) power output at 30 W for 75 Sec, (2) 90 W for 40 Sec, and (3) 90 W for 55 Sec in oxygen. In vitro cell culture and metabolic activity studies on optimized films [as in (1)] demonstrate increased adhesion, coverage, and growth of human umbilical vein endothelial cells that were confluent over a shorter time period (<24 H) than controls. Such materials enhanced the EC response and promoted endothelialization on optimized films, thus demonstrating their use as bypass graft materials.
