Riparian zones, transitional areas between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, have high plant species diversities. However, they are extremely vulnerable to natural factors, such as changes in river hydrological conditions (floods, droughts) and disturbances from human activities (dams, farmland encroachment, etc.). The distribution of plant life forms and variations in the degree of vegetation coverage in a riparian zone can reflect changes in the environmental conditions. In this study, we analyzed eight reaches from the four main tributaries (Dongyang River, Yang River, Sanggan River, and Yongding River) of the Yongding River Basin, which were selected based on their climate, terrain, and degree of human disturbance. One reach was located on the Dongyang River (DYR), two reaches on the Yang River (YR1 and YR2), three on the Sanggan River (SGR1, 2, and 3), and two on the Yongding River (YDR1 and YDR2). Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology was used to obtain high-resolution, true-color, multispectral images. The distributions of the plant life forms and the differences in the vegetation coverage were analyzed in the eight selected riparian zones. The results showed that grasses dominated the riparian zone and shrubs and trees were sparsely distributed along both banks of all streams, excluding SGR2 and YDR1. The areas with an extremely high vegetation coverage classification accounted for the highest proportion in the DYR (29.3%), YR2 (48.1%), SGR1 (32.9%), SGR2 (39.9%), SGR3 (85.1%), YDR1 (36.7%), and YDR2 (51.1%) reaches. Extremely low vegetation coverage accounted for the highest proportion in the YR2 reach, reaching 37.4%. This study indicated that natural factors and human activities have a serious impact on the distribution of different plants life forms and vegetation coverage classifications in the riparian zones of the Yongding River Basin. We hope that this research can provide practical assistance in the efforts of ecological restoration and the management of riparian vegetation in the Yongding River Basin.

Human activities impose important disturbances on both organic and inorganic chemistry in fluvial systems. In this study, we investigated the intra-annual and downstream variations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic matter (DOM) excitation-emission matrix fluorescence (EEM) with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), major ions, and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) species in a mountainous tributary of the Yellow River, China. Both DOM quantity and quality, as represented by DOC and DOM fluorescence respectively, changed spatially and seasonally in the studied region. Fluorescence intensity of tryptophan-like components (C3) were found much higher at the populated downstream regions than in the undisturbed forested upstream regions. Seasonally, stronger fluorescence intensity of protein-like components (C3 and C4) was observed in the low-flow period (December) and in the medium-flow period (March) than in the high-flow period (May), particularly for the downstream reaches, reflecting the dominant impacts of wastewater pollution in the downstream regions. In contrast to the protein-like fluorescence, humic-like fluorescence components C1 and C2 exhibited distinctly higher intensity in the high-flow period with smaller spatial variation indicating strong flushing effect of increasing water discharge on terrestrial-sourced humic-like materials in the high-flow period. Pollution-affected dissolved inorganic ions, particularly Na, Cl, and NH-N, showed similar spatial and seasonal variations with protein-like fluorescence of DOM. The significant positive correlations between protein-like fluorescence of DOM and pollution-affected ions, particularly Na, Cl, and NH-N, suggested that there were similar pollution sources and transportation pathways of both inorganic and organic pollutants in the region. The combination of DOM fluorescence properties and inorganic ions could provide an important reference for the pollution source characterization and river basin management.

Understanding the supply–demand relationships and driving mechanisms of ecosystem services (ES) provides a theoretical foundation for sustainable ecosystem management. This study utilized Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) models and geographical detectors to quantify the spatial–temporal patterns of the supply, demand, and supply–demand ratio of ESs such as water yield, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration, along with their driving factors, in the Shanxi section of the Yellow River Basin. The results show that: (1) From the year 2000 to 2020, although the supply and demand of water yield, soil conservation, and carbon sequestration fluctuated, they generally increased during this period of time. In comparison to ecosystem services from the year 2000 to 2020, the supply of water yield exceeded the demand in 2020. The supply, demand, and supply–demand ratio of ESs exhibited notable spatial heterogeneity. (2) The most notable factors influencing the supply–demand ratio of water yield varied between 2000 and 2020. In 2000, construction land was the most important factor, while in 2020, cropland had the greatest impact. However, the primary factors affecting the supply–demand ratio of soil conservation and carbon sequestration remained the same in 2000 and 2020. Forestland was the primary factor in 2000, while construction land was the primary factor in 2020. (3) Considering interaction factors, the interaction factors between construction land and precipitation had the greatest impact on the supply–demand ratio of water yield in 2000, while the interaction between forestland and cropland had the greatest impact in 2020. The interaction between cropland and shrubland had the greatest impact on the supply–demand ratio of soil conservation in 2000, whereas the interaction factors between construction land and forestland had the greatest impact in 2020. The interaction between construction land and shrubland had the greatest impact on the supply–demand ratio of carbon sequestration in 2000, while the interaction between construction land and cropland had the greatest impact in 2020. Overall, the interaction between construction land and various land-use factors had the strongest explanation for the supply–demand ratio of ecosystem services. This study can serve as a reference for the comprehensive development and utilization of the Shanxi section of the Yellow River Basin.

In this study, domestic sewage contamination in the Guanting Reservoir, one of the major water source reservoirs of Beijing, was examined using sterols as tracing molecular markers. Nineteen sediment samples in seven cross-sections in the Guanting Reservoir were collected, extracted, and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Seven different sterols were identified and quantified from the surface sediment samples in the Guanting Reservoir. The total sterols in sediments of the reservoir ranged from 2.78 μg g−1 to 40.31 μg g−1 with the average concentration of 13.53 μg g−1. Concentrations of fecal sterols, coprostanol and epicoprostanol in the Guishui River reservoir area were generally higher than in the Yongding River reservoir area. The average concentrations of coprostanol and epicoprostanol in the Yongding River reservoir area were 0.41 μg g−1 and 0.34 μg g−1, respectively. The average concentrations of coprostanol and epicoprostanol in the Guishui River reservoir area were 0.72 μg g−1 and 0.70 μg g−1, respectively. Ratios of sterols indicated higher sewage pollution in regions close to river mouths and reservoir banks. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated three distinct sources of sterols from domestic sewage, phytoplankton, and terrestrial higher plants. This article identified the current situation of sewage contamination in sediments of the Guanting Reservoir, which could provide important references for further implementation of pollution control and basin management in the region.

Ecological water replenishment via interbasin water diversion projects provides opportunities for ecological river restoration. Untangling water quality changes, microbiota dynamics, and community functions is necessary for sustainable ecological management. Using the Yongding River as a case study, we monitored the water quality and applied genomic sequencing to investigate microbial communities of the river in different stages after ecological water replenishment. Our results showed that river water quality represented by chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) did not change significantly during months after water replenishment. The bacterial community composition varied in different months and river subsections. The Cyanobium_PCC-6307, CL500-29 marine group, and Pseudomonas were dominant in the later stages after water replenishment. Water temperature, pH, and nutrient levels significantly affected the microbial community composition, and ecological restoration may have the potential to influence nitrogen cycling in the river. Our results can provide ecological insights into sustainable water quality maintenance and river management following ecological restoration enabled by ecological water replenishment.
