Diabetes is known to influence salivary composition and function, eventually affecting the oral cavity. We thus evaluated saliva samples for levels of glucose, amylase and total protein, and assessed salivary flow rate in diabetics and healthy non-diabetics. We also analyzed these parameters with regard to duration and type of diabetes mellitus and gender, and aimed to assess the interrelationships among the variables included in the study. A total of 120 age- and sex-matched participants were divided into 3 groups of 40 each; the uncontrolled diabetic group, the controlled diabetic group and the healthy non-diabetic group. Salivary investigations were performed using unstimulated whole saliva. Mean salivary glucose levels were found to be significantly elevated in both uncontrolled and controlled diabetics, as compared to healthy non-diabetics. There were significant decreases in mean salivary amylase levels in controlled diabetics when compared to healthy non-diabetics. Other than salivary glucose, no other parameters were found to be markedly affected in diabetes mellitus. Further research is needed to explore the clinical implications of these study results.

There is an inverse relationship between serum lipid profile and Oral Cancer and Oral precancer. There was no overall significant correlation of serum lipid profile with tobacco abuse.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of swellings in the head and neck regions. Methods: For this study, 70 cases with clinically obvious swellings in head and neck regions were selected randomly. The ultrasonographic features considered were shape, boundary, echo intensity, ultrasound architecture of lesion, posterior echoes and ultrasound characteristic of tissues. Intergroup comparisons were made between four different types of swellings: inflammatory; cystic; benign; and malignant. Results: A comparison was made between benign and malignant neoplasms, and the criteria of boundary, echo intensity and ultrasound architecture of lesions are statistically significant as the P-value is ,0.05. The comparison of inflammatory swellings and malignant neoplasms shows that criteria of boundary and ultrasound architecture of lesions are statistically significant. The comparison of cystic swellings and benign neoplasms concluded that only the criterion of ultrasound characteristics of tissues is statistically significant. The comparison of inflammatory swellings and benign neoplasms shows that the criteria of boundary and echo intensity are statistically significant. The comparison of inflammatory swellings and cystic swellings concluded that the criteria of boundary, shape, echo intensity, posterior echoes and ultrasound characteristics of tissues are statistically significant. Conclusion: It can be concluded that clinical diagnosis had a sensitivity and accuracy of 85.7% and ultrasonographic diagnosis had a sensitivity and accuracy of 98.5%.

Nodal vascularity can be used to differentiate benign from malignant lymphadenopathy. Proper judicious CDUS examination provides an opportunity to eliminate the need for biopsy/FNAC in reactive nodes.

Dental treatment is reported to be the greatest unattended health need of people with a disability. The aim of the present study was therefore to quantify the prevalence of oral diseases with a psychosomatic component (recurrent aphthous stomatitis, burning mouth syndrome, and oral lichen planus) in psychiatric patients and to screen these patients for any other oral disorders, so that better care could be provided. In this cross-sectional, singleassessment study, 150 psychiatric patients were evaluated for presence of oral disorders. They were screened based on their socio-demographic profiles, clinical profile, and standardized psychiatric scales. The prevalence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), burning mouth syndrome (BMS), and oral lichen planus (OLP) was 19.33% (29 patients), 20.66% (31 patients) and 5.33% (8 patients), respectively, amongst all psychiatric patients. The prevalence of burning mouth syndrome was much higher in patients taking psychiatric medications (25%) than in drug-naïve patients. On screening for other oral disorders, 35.33% of psychiatric patients had at least one other such disorder. We concluded that this patient group experiences a considerable burden of occult oral disorders necessitating thorough oral care. We also described the possible causes of the higher prevalence of oral disorders in psychiatric patients. (J Oral Sci 54, 85-91, 2012)

Background Early detection holds the key to an effective control of cancers in general and of oral cancers in particular. However, screening procedures for oral cancer are not straightforward due to procedural requirements as well as feasibility issues, especially in resource-limited countries. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study to compare the performance of chemiluminescence, toluidine blue and histopathology for detection of high-risk precancerous oral lesions. We evaluated 99 lesions from 55 patients who underwent chemiluminescence and toluidine blue tests along with biopsy and histopathological examination. We studied inter-as well as intra-rater agreement in the histopathological evaluation and then using latent class modeling, we estimated the operating characteristics of these tests in the absence of a reference standard test. Results There was a weak inter-rater agreement (kappa < 0.15) as well as a weak intra-rater reproducibility (Pearson's r = 0.28, intra-class correlation rho = 0.03) in the histopathological evaluation of potentially high-risk precancerous lesions. When compared to histopathology, chemiluminescence and toluidine blue retention had a sensitivity of 1.00 and 0.59, respectively and a specificity of 0.01 and 0.79, respectively. However, latent class analysis indicated a low sensitivity (0.37) and high specificity (0.90) of histopathological evaluation. Toluidine blue had a near perfect high sensitivity and specificity for detection of high-risk lesions. Conclusion In our study, there was variability in the histopathological evaluation of oral precancerous lesions. Our results indicate that toluidine blue retention test may be better suited than chemiluminescence to detect high-risk oral precancerous lesions in a high-prevalence and low-resource setting like India.
