The effect of the anti-rotating terms on the short-time evolution and the quantum Zeno (QZE) and anti-Zeno (AQZE) effects is studied for a two-level system coupled to a bosonic environment. A unitary transformation and perturbation theory are used to obtain the electron self-energy, energy shift and the enhanced QZE or the AQZE, simultaneously. The calculated Zeno time depends on the atomic transition frequency sensitively. When the atomic transition frequency is smaller than the central frequency of the spectrum of boson environment, the Zeno time is prolonged and the anti-rotating terms enhance the QZE; when it is larger than that the Zeno time is reduced and the anti-rotating terms enhance the AQZE.
Many cockroach species have adapted to urban environments, and some have been serious pests of public health in the tropics and subtropics. Here, we present the 3.38-Gb genome and a consensus gene set of the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana. We report insights from both genomic and functional investigations into the underlying basis of its adaptation to urban environments and developmental plasticity. In comparison with other insects, expansions of gene families in P. americana exist for most core gene families likely associated with environmental adaptation, such as chemoreception and detoxification. Multiple pathways regulating metamorphic development are well conserved, and RNAi experiments inform on key roles of 20-hydroxyecdysone, juvenile hormone, insulin, and decapentaplegic signals in regulating plasticity. Our analyses reveal a high level of sequence identity in genes between the American cockroach and two termite species, advancing it as a valuable model to study the evolutionary relationships between cockroaches and termites.
We show theoretically that a one-dimensional photonic crystal containing a negative-index material has an omnidirectional gap, owing to the mechanism of zero (volume) averaged refractive index. In contrast to the Bragg gap, the edge of such a zero-n̄ gap is insensitive to incident angle and polarization. When an impurity is introduced, a defect mode appears inside the zero-n̄ gap with a very weak dependence on incident angle and invariant with scaling.
We theoretically study ghost imaging with incoherent and partially coherent light radiation by using classical optical coherence theory. A Gaussian thin lens equation is derived for the ghost image. The equation depends on both paths. The quality and visibility of the ghost image are influenced by the source's transverse size, coherence width, and object characteristics. The differences between ghost imaging formed with incoherent light radiation and with entangled photon pairs are discussed.
We propose a simple scheme of atom localization based on resonance fluorescence from a standing-wave field. The Rabi frequency is position dependent and therefore the spontaneously emitted photon carries the information of the atomic center-of-mass motion. This leads to atom localization even during the flight through the standing-wave field.PACS number͑s͒: 32.50.ϩd
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
