Based on temperature logging of 9 boreholes and thermal conductivity measurement of 297 samples in Sichuan basin, 9 terrestrial heat‐flows of high quality are reported and thermal conductivity stratigraphic column is suggested as well. The contour maps of geothermal gradient and heat flow are presented after combining with previously available data. The variation of thermal conductivity of sedimentary rocks in Sichuan basin is mainly controlled by the lithology, rather than the current burial depths. At present, the geothermal gradient ranges from 17.7 to 33.3 °C/km with an average value of 22.8 °C/km in the basin, and the heat flow ranges from 35.4 to 68.8 mW/m2 with an average of 53.2 mW/m2, which are typical of cratonic basins with medium‐low heat flows. In regard to the areal distribution of heat flows, they are relatively higher in the southwestern and central part and lower in the northern part of the Sichuan basin. The heat flows are apparently dependent upon tectonic settings of the basement.

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is sensitive to low temperature and easy to be subjected to chilling injury, which causes fruit ripening disorder. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the expression of genes related to ethylene and fruit ripening disorder caused by chilling injury. Papaya fruits were firstly stored at 7°C and 12°C for 25 and 30 days, respectively, then treated with exogenous ethylene and followed by ripening at 25°C for 5 days. Chilling injury symptoms such as pulp water soaking were observed in fruit stored at 7°C on 20 days, whereas the coloration and softening were completely blocked after 25 days, Large differences in the changes in the expression levels of twenty two genes involved in ethylene were seen during 7°C-storage with chilling injury. Those genes with altered expression could be divided into three groups: the group of genes that were up-regulated, including ACS1/2/3, EIN2, EIN3s/EIL1, CTR1/2/3, and ERF1/3/4; the group of genes that were down-regulated, including ACO3, ETR1, CTR4, EBF2, and ERF2; and the group of genes that were un-regulated, including ACO1/2, ERS, and EBF1. The results also showed that pulp firmness had a significantly positive correlation with the expression of ACS2, ACO1, CTR1/4, EIN3a/b, and EBF1/2 in fruit without chilling injury. This positive correlation was changed to negative one in fruit after storage at 7°C for 25 days with chilling injury. The coloring index displayed significantly negative correlations with the expression levels of ACS2, ACO1/2, CTR4, EIN3a/b, ERF3 in fruit without chilling injury, but these correlations were changed into the positive ones in fruit after storage at 7°C for 25 days with chilling injury. All together, these results indicate that these genes may play important roles in the abnormal softening and coloration with chilling injury in papaya.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 0.5-1 billion people worldwide face the risk of selenium (Se) deficiency because of the low Se concentration in their diets. Broccoli can accumulate Se and comprises a source of daily Se supplement for humans. Se biofortification is an effective strategy for enhancing Se content in crops. In the present study, the effects of Se yeast and selenite application on the Se content and nutrient quality of broccoli were investigated. RESULTS: Broccoli growth was promoted by Se yeast but inhibited by selenite. The total Se content of broccoli florets remarkably increased with increasing exogenous Se fertilizer concentrations. The main Se species in broccoli florets were methylselenocysteine and selenomethionine, and their contents were significantly higher under Se yeast treatments than under selenite treatments. Se(VI) was detected only under selenite treatments. Se yeast and selenite had different influences on soluble sugar, soluble protein, vitamin C and free amino acid contents in broccoli florets. The total phenolic acid and glucosinolate contents were substantially increased by Se yeast and selenite, although the total flavonoid content was reduced by Se yeast. Tests on antioxidant enzyme activities revealed that several antioxidant enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) responded to Se yeast and selenite treatments.CONCLUSION: Se yeast is preferred over selenite for maximizing Se uptake and nutrient accumulation in Se-rich broccoli cultivation. However, an extremely high Se content in broccoli florets cannot be directly consumed by humans, although they can be processed into Se supplements.

The Sichuan Basin is a superimposition basin composed of terrestrial and marine sediments that is well known for its abundant petroleum resources. Thermal history reconstruction using paleogeothermal indicators, including vitrinite reflectance and thermochronological data, shows that different structural subsections of the Sichuan Basin have experienced various paleogeothermal episodes since the Paleozoic. The lower structural subsection comprising the Lower Paleozoic to Middle Permian (Pz-P 2 ) successions experienced a high paleogeothermal gradient (23.0-42.6°C/km) at the end of the Middle Permian (P 2 ), whereas the upper structural subsection comprising Late Permian to Mesozoic strata underwent a relatively lower paleogeothermal gradient (13.2-26.9°C/km) at the beginning of the denudation (Late Cretaceous or Paleocene in the different regions). During the denudation period, the Sichuan Basin experienced a successive cooling episode. The high paleogeothermal gradient resulted from an intensive thermal event correlated to the Emeishan mantle plume. The heat flow value reached 124.0 mW/m 2 in the southwestern basin near the center of the Emeishan large igneous province. The low geothermal gradient episode with heat flow ranging from 31.2 to 70.0 mW/m 2 may be related to the foreland basin evolution. Selenium (Se) is essential for human health, however, Se is deficient in soil in many places all around the world, resulting in human diseases, such as notorious Keshan disease and Keshin–Beck disease. Therefore, Se biofortification is a popular approach to improve Se uptake and maintain human health. Beneficial microorganisms, including mycorrhizal and root endophytic fungi, dark septate fungi, and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs), show multiple functions, especially increased plant nutrition uptake, growth and yield, and resistance to abiotic stresses. Such functions can be used for Se biofortification and increased growth and yield under drought and salt stress. The present review summarizes the use of mycorrhizal fungi and PGPRs in Se biofortification, aiming to improving their practical use.
