PurposeQuality in the construction industry is an important issue yet ignored during the initial stages of the life cycle of a project, that is, the design and construction stage. The contribution of stakeholders, especially the architects is generally suspended though it has huge significance in terms of cost and time related to quality. This research endeavors to examine the issues related to the design and construction stages of the project from architects' purview, to understand the relative importance of these issues in the Indian construction industry.Design/methodology/approachThe study of qualitative data conducted formed a basis for online quantitative data collection that was further analyzed with the help of cross-tabulation and multiple correspondence analysis methods.FindingsThe study concludes that the budget of a project is a corresponding factor related to quality concern for architects. The study also established that the quality issues corresponding to high budgets are closely related to the construction stage and are identified as preparation of checklist, and bidding process of hiring the contractor on the lowest bid.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is limited to analyzing the perspective of architects; however, other stakeholders of the construction industry may represent a different opinion.Practical implicationsThis research emphasizes the importance of the client's role, and need for integration and coordination among stakeholders in the construction industry for effective quality control and management.Originality/valueThe research presents an exhaustive literature review on quality issues and its importance with respect to cost implications, standard practices, sustainability and the life cycle of the project.
Project Management techniques have been developed by many researchers from time to time, to make optimum use of resources. Constructability and Design Structure Matrix are also to be listed among such tools. An attempt has been made in this study to bring together and utilize the best of the management processes to achieve project success. There are mainly two stages of the study. Firstly, construction projects are studied from the point of view of Constructability and a list of thirty activities identified, under three different heads. These activities are then surveyed with a sample group of thirty architects and data regarding their dependency and independency are collected. Based on suitable scores, the data is used to create Design Structure Matrices, which are further processed for iterations, in the second stage. The paper aims to study the advantages of applying DSM to the activities, which are based on the concept of Constructability. The results obtained after the final iterations of DSM, give multidimensional analysis regarding their parallel run, sequencing and networking etc. The DSM's obtained before and after the iterations help prove, that the complex Construction projects can be managed more efficiently after applying DSM.
Abstract-Thegrowing demand of e-learning system in academia is well accepted worldwide. One of the vital missions of e-learning is to allow people to learn for personal accomplishment or to earn a professional degree, without physically attending a traditional university or academic setting. E-learning can be applied for all levels of schooling from grade school to graduate degrees, and is versatile enough to accommodate all learning styles. A good number of researchers all over the world have already worked for developing different types of web based e-learning system. In this paper, we have presented our proposedweb-based e-learning system which is essential for any tertiary educational institution. Both students and teachers are tied up in this system. Overall it's a guided learning for student and a great way to change our typical learning system but not replacement of teaching, it's only the supplement idea for teaching which helps to learn easily and improve the productivity. We have also evaluated the effectiveness of our proposed system by conducting a survey, analyzed and presented the result.Index Terms-E-learning, computer based training (CBTs), data flow diagram (DFD), survey, evaluation, web based training (WBTs).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
