Abstract. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has had a profound effect on the construction industry. It has greatly improved coordination among stakeholders, enhanced productivity, and increased profits. However, many factors still limit the application of BIM in the construction industry. This study conducts a literature review to identify these negative factors. Firstly, twenty-two sub-factors are identified and classified into five categories: Technology, Cost, Management, Personnel, and Legal. Secondly, some suggestions for eliminating these limiting factors are given. Finally, the study also identifies further research directions for improving BIM theory and applying BIM technology widely and successfully. The results of this study will provide support for practitioners who are using or plan to use BIM.

ABSTRACT. Governments worldwide are keen to encourage PPP schemes, however PPP is not a foolproof business. Many local governments and private investors have suffered severe or trying experiences. In this research, 10 case studies were conducted to identify the obstacles and difficulties for successful implementation of PPP projects from the perspective of government guarantees. These PPP projects include two water supply plants, two sewage treatment plants, two power supply plants, two highway projects, and two bridge projects. The findings obtained indicate that the local governments are familiar with "the type of guarantees" to provide to the private investor but they are unsure of the "amount" that should be given. Many PPP projects have therefore been heavily criticized for over benefiting the private investors as the government provides them with too many guarantees. The inappropriate guarantees offered by the government are regarded as one of the root causes of PPP projects' failure. The lessons learned are valuable for determining appropriate government guarantees for future PPP projects and broadening the opportunities for infrastructure development with PPP procurement model.

Traditional construction material procurement is being replaced by electronic commerce construction material procurement now. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has shown benefit and practical value in construction material quantity takeoff and cost estimate. However, very few efforts have been directed to the application and integration of BIM in e-commerce material procurement.The author compares the present commercial BIM and non-BIM based quantity takeoff and cost estimate software, presents one solution to link the BIM with RSMeans Unit Price cost data to generate more accurate cost estimate reports, identifies the possibility and potential benefit of integrating BIM and e-commerce software solutions in material cost estimate and procurement process, designs one weight coefficient based model to evaluate the performance of material suppliers, proposes a framework to integrate BIM with e-commerce in material procurement and supplier performance evaluation process, and develops a preliminary display version of BIM integrated with e-commerce software system. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify risk factors in building information modeling (BIM) technology application, analyze the correlation between risk factors, and find the most influential risk factors using interpretative structural model (ISM), put forward a response to targeted suggestions, and provide a reference for widespread BIM technology application.Design/methodology/approachLiterature reviews, ISM, a questionnaire survey and expert interviews were used in this paper. First, the risk factors of BIM technology application and their relationships were determined by consulting the relevant BIM literature. Second, to more intuitively reflect the relationships between risk factors, an ISM model based on expert interviews was established to structure the explanatory relationships and hierarchical relationships between factors. Finally, a questionnaire survey was conducted for relevant practitioners, and a scale was designed to evaluate the risk factors of BIM technology application to determine the risk factors that have a greater impact on implementing BIM technology.FindingsThe root risk factors of BIM technology consist of unclear data ownership, incomplete standard BIM systems, lack of industry insurance, lack of BIM technicians, lack of BIM project practice experience, BIM infrastructure preparation, inconsistent thinking about BIM from project participants, changes in delivery mode and software function problems.Research limitations/implicationsThe risk-sharing of BIM technology and the analysis of responsibilities, rights and benefits of all parties in a BIM project can be used as future research directions to solve higher management problems.Originality/valueThis paper describes the risks of BIM technology application for related researchers and provides another research train of thought for the follow-up studies.
