Según Raymond Leslie Williams en su libro The Modern Latin American Novel, publicado en 1998, "el tradicionalismo y el nacionalismo en la cultura y en la política pertenecen al pasado porque la actitud de los novelistas latinoamericanos es posnacionalista" (160). Así es que, de cierto modo, hablar hoy de la búsqueda de la identidad nacional es hablar de una cuestión anacrónica.Sin embargo, el caso de Panamá es doblemente único. Por una parte, hay que reconocer que tal vez el primer tomo de cuentos que intenta captar la totalidad de la nación panameña sea Las huellas de mis pasos de Pedro Rivera, que data de 1993, unos setenta años después de que Diego Rivera se esforzara por captar la totalidad de la nueva nación mexicana, la posrrevolucionaria, en una serie de frescos, y casi setenta años después de que Rómulo Gallegos emprendiera su proyecto novelístico de captar la totalidad de la nación venezolana.En el transcurso de este artículo propondré una teoría para explicar este aparente atraso. Por otra parte, propondré la teoría de que la identidad nacional de Panamá, a diferencia de la de los otros países latinoamericanos, no se limita a una síntesis geográfica, étnica e histórica. Un estudio tanto de las varias antologías del cuento panameño como de los tomos individuales de tres cuentistas sobresalientes revela que la identidad nacional de Panamá se distingue precisamente por su fuerte carácter internacional o cosmopolita.Veamos primero hasta qué punto Las huellas de mis pasos se emparenta con las novelas nacionales de antaño y con alguno que otro proyecto cuentístico. No cabe duda de que la búsqueda de la identidad nacional en la narrativa latinoamericana surge dentro del criollismo, que predomina más o menos entre 1915 y 1945. Surge como reacción contra los gobernantes e intelectuales positivistas del siglo diecinueve y también contra los literatos modernistas.Los positivistas, en su afán de modernización, abogaban por seguir los modelos de Francia, Inglaterra y Estados Unidos. La ciudad de México y Buenos Aires se embellecieron con bulevares y casas elegantes al estilo parisiense. Al mismo tiempo, renegaban de sus orígenes indígenas o africanos. Efectivamente el llamado orden y progreso, lema de la bandera brasileña, con su ingreso en la economía internacional, enriquecía, cuando mucho, al diez por ciento de la población nacional y perjudicaba, por lo menos, al noventa por ciento.El primer cuentista que quiso plasmar la identidad nacional de su país en una serie de tomos que datan desde 1912 hasta 1944 fue el chileno Mariano Latorre, cuyo enfoque
