Şeyhmus Bingül Öz Osmanlı Devleti'nin İstanbul merkezli ilk resmî gazetesi Takvim-i Vekayi'dir. Gazetenin başlıca amacı devlet kanunları ile reform uygulamalarının halk arasında yaygınlaştırılmasıydı. Bu gazeteyi daha sonra yarı resmi ve hususi nitelikteki yayınlar takip etmiştir. 1864'te uygulanan Tuna Vilayet Nizamnamesi ise basın yayın hayatının Osmanlı taşrasına da yansımasını sağlamıştır. Nizamname, her vilayette bir matbaa kurulmasını ve vilayet gazetelerinin çıkarılmasını kapsamıştır. Diyarbakır'ın ilk vilayet gazetesi 1869'da yayına başlayan Diyarbekir Gazetesi'dir. İttihat ve Terakki'nin güçlenmeye başladığı Meşrutiyet sonrası dönemde ise hususi gazeteler çıkarılmaya başlanmıştır. Bunlardan biri de 1911-1915 yılları arasında yayınlanan Dicle Gazetesi'dir. Dicle Gazetesi İttihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti'nin Diyarbakır şubesinin desteğiyle çıkarılmıştır. Gazetede 4 yıllık yayın hayatı boyunca dâhili ve harici siyasi, sosyal, ekonomik, düşünsel ve edebi konular hakkında yazılar yayınlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada Dicle Gazetesi'nin çıkarılma aşamasındaki gelişmeler, yazar kadrosu, yayın politikası ve gazetenin Diyarbakır için önemi incelenmiştir.
Bu çalışmada iki seyyahın gözlemleri çerçevesinde Muş'un 19. yüzyıl tarihi değerlendirilecektir. İlki Amerikan Misyoner Horatio Southgate'tir. İkincisi ise Keldani kökenli İngiltere vatandaşı Hormuzd Rassamdır. Çalışmanın örneklemini oluşturan eserlerin önemi sırasıyla Tanzimat'ın Muş'ta uygulanmasından öncesi ve sonrasına denk gelmeleridir. Zira Southgate 1837'de, Rassam ise 1877'de Muş'a gitmiştir. Böylece iki farklı dönem üzerinden Muş'un geçirmiş olduğu değişim ve dönüşümler tespit edilerek bunların karşılaştırması yapılabilecektir. Tanzimat'ın kent kalkınmasına dair planlamasının 19. yüzyılın son çeyreğine gelindiğinde Muş'a ne ölçüde yansıdığı, toplumsal ve ekonomik şartların hangi yönde evrildiği çalışmanın cevap arayacağı sorulardandır.
Salgın hastalıklar insanlık tarihi boyunca birçok kez meydana gelerek toplumların ve devletlerin sosyal, ekonomik, siyasal ve askeri hayatlarını derinden etkilemiştir. Göç, ekonomik kriz ve nüfus azalmasına sebep olan salgınların önüne geçilmesi hususunda yüzyıllarca çeşitli yöntemlere başvurulmuştur. Bu da modern tıbbın gelişimine kadar geçen süreci pozitif yönde etkilemiştir. Toplumları büyük ölçüde etkileyen salgınlardan biri de koleradır. Hijyen koşullarından uzak yerlerde ortaya çıkan kolera, Osmanlı Devleti'nde birkaç kez yayılmıştır. İnsan hareketliliğinin yoğun olduğu yerlerin başında gelen İstanbul, koleradan etkilenen başlıca şehirlerden biridir. XIX. yüzyılda, en az beş büyük kolera salgını geçiren kentte 1911 yazı kolera ile mücadeleyle geçmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı 1911 yazında İstanbul'da meydana gelen kolera salgınının etkisini dönemin muhalif yayınlarından birini oluşturan Alemdar Gazetesi aracılığıyla saptamaktır. İncelenen nüshalara göre, 1911 yılının yaz mevsimi boyunca etkili olmasına rağmen hastalık Ağustos ayında artış göstermiştir. Eylül ayının sonlarında kontrol altına alınmaya başlanan hastalık, kışa doğru neredeyse bitme noktasına gelmiştir. Bu çerçevede gazetede yer alan kolera vakaları, koleraya karşı alınan tedbirler, halkın ve devletin koleraya bakış açısı incelenmiştir. 1911 yazında İstanbul'da meydana gelen salgında vaka sayısı 2.500'ü aşmıştır. Salgına karşı alınan tedbirlerde ise yetersiz kalınmıştır.
On dokuzuncu yüzyılın bilim ve teknik alanındaki başlıca icatlarından biri telefondur. 1875'teki icadından sonra dünya ülkelerine hızla yayılmıştır. Osmanlılar, patenti Alexander Graham Bell tarafından 1876'de alınan telefon ile II. Abdülhamid döneminde, 1881'de tanışmıştır. Ancak telefonla ilk deneyimleri çok kısa sürmüştür: Telefon, "gizli-saklı" işlerde kullanılma ihtimali üzerine, 1886'da yasaklanmıştır. Avrupa'dan Osmanlı liman kentlerine gelen telefonlar gümrüklerde "tevkif edilerek" muhafaza altına alınmıştır. Bu tedbirlere rağmen telefonun kaçak yollarla ülkeye girişi engellenememiş ve zaman içerisinde kullanımına yönelik talepler artmıştır. II. Meşrutiyet'in liberal politikaları çerçevesinde yabancı şirketlere imtiyaz verilerek telefon kullanımı teşvik edilmiştir. İstanbul, telefon ile özdeşleşen başlıca Osmanlı kenti olmuştur. İzmir ve Aydın gibi ticaret kentleri ile Anadolu'nun muhtelif yerlerindeki kullanımı sınırlı kalmıştır. Telefonun Osmanlı'ya ilk girişinden serbest bırakılmasına kadar geçen sürede, popüler süreli yayınlarda telefona dair geniş bir literatür oluşmuştur. Bu süre içerisinde, telefon kullanımı konusunda gelişmiş ülkelere nazaran oldukça geri kalan Osmanlı'nın telefonla imtihanı yoğun bürokratik yazışmalarda da kendini göstermiştir.
Başlangıçta arazi ve vergi tespitine yönelik yapılan tahrirler Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun modernleşmeye başladığı 19. yüzyılda yerini daha sistemik nüfus sayımlarına bırakmıştır. Yenilikler temelinde merkezileşmeye çalışan devletin idari, mali ve askeri alanlarda düzene girmesini gerektiren modern nüfus sayımının ilki 1831 yılında yapılmıştır. Böylece imparatorluk sahip olduğu insan gücünün nicelik ve nitelikleri hakkında detaylı bir bilgiye sahip olmaya çalışmıştır. Nüfusun heterojen olması ve siyasal ve askeri nedenlerden dolayı gerçek nüfusun tespiti ise oldukça zor olmuştur. İmparatorluğun geneline yayılmaya çalışılan bu nüfus sayımlarından biri de 1836 yılında Van eyaletinde yapılmıştır. Bu sayımda Van merkez köyleri ve mahalleleri dışında buraya bağlı kaza ve nahiyelerinin de kaydı tutulmuştur. Bu çalışmada Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi'nde NFS.d kodu ve 2798 numarası ile kayıtlı olan ''Van Eyaleti Dahilindeki Nefs-i Van Köylerinin Gayrimüslim Erkek Nüfus Defteri'' ve bu defteri özellikle yerleşim yerleri itibariyle tamamlama özelliğine sahip olan yine NFS.d kodu ve 2799 numarası ile kayıtlı olan ''Nefs-i Van'a Bağlı Gayrimüslim Köylerin Gurbette Olanlarının Defteri'' incelenmiştir.
