Since concept cartoons give an important opportunity for students to achieve informal physics learning, the current research focused on pre-service teachers’ initial impressions of the concept cartoons in the school corridors and informal physics learning. The aim of the research was to determine pre-service teachers’ initial impressions of the concept cartoons in the school corridors and informal physics learning via the concept cartoons. After a 14-week intervention, a questionnaire with seven open-ended questions was administered to 542 pre-service teachers from primary, mathematics and science teacher education programmes. Their responses to the questionnaire were exposed to qualitative content analysis via two categories (advanced and poor impression). The results showed that pre-service teachers generally refered to advanced impressions of the concept cartoons. In light of the results, it can be deduced that the concept cartoons have enhanced their initial impressions of informal physics/science learning via the concept cartoons. The current research recommends that pre-service teachers should be encouraged to produce their own concept cartoons on the topic(s) they found difficult. Keywords: concept cartoon, informal learning, initial impression, science education.
In this research, it is aimed to determine whether there is a relationship between the students' physics learning approaches and the problem solving strategies and the differentiation status of these concepts according to some variables. The research was conducted with 325 students who were receiving education at 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade. The data were collected by using the scale of problem solving strategies used in physics adapted by Eryılmaz and Çalışkan (2015) and the scale of physics learning approaches adapted by Özkan and Sezgin Selçuk (2014).. It was determined that physics learning approaches and physics problem solving strategies did differ according to perceived physics achievement and did not differ according to gender, type of school and perceived physics achievement. Findings were reached like as that there was no relationship physics problem solving strategies and learning approaches; the relationships between the sub-dimensions of the scales were high but the relationships between the sub-dimensions of the two scales were meaningless or low for some of them. According to these findings, it can be said that the perceived physics achievement affects students' physics learning approaches and problem solving strategies; the school types are effective in the formation of students' physics learning approaches; there is no significant relationship between the physics learning approach and the physics problem solving strategies that students use. Developing measurement tools that can identify problem solving and learning approaches together may be suggested for next researches.
Anahtar sözcükler: Problem çözme, fizik eğitimi, ipucu, kuvvet ve hareket, bilgisayar destekli öğretim ABSTRACT: To teach problem solving to students and develop their problem solving skills, the process they pass through problem solving should be known well. Identifying the steps that students had difficulty in this process will provide data about how to assist them. In this study, it is aimed to investigate students' problem solving process related to "Force and Motion" unit scope of hints they need. For that purpose, hint supported problem solving instrument (HSPSI) that consists of 19 problems and enables students to reach the hints they need in problem solving process has been developed. Participants of this study consist of 12 students who receive education at 10 th grade in province of Trabzon. Students solved 19 problems using HSPSI in five course hours, in one course hour per week. Data was collected from system records provided by HSPSI, semi-structured interviews conducted with students, and field notes. Conclusions were reached as students have difficulty most at steps of understanding problem and making solution plan, hints that they need during problem solving differ according to students and problems, hints students need during problem solving do not decrease regularly and st...
