Studies were carried out with Cunninghamella elegans UCP/WFCC 0542 to evaluate the effects of an abundant supply of amino acids, asparagine and corn steep liquor associated with sucrose on the production of biomass and chitosan by submerged fermentation. The concentrations of the components of the culture medium which were determined by a 2 3 full factorial design evaluated the interactions and effects of the independent variables of the sucrose, asparagine and corn steep liquor in relation to carbon and nitrogen sources, on the production of chitosan regarding biomass. The best results were observed at the central point [asparagine 0.025%, sucrose 0.15% and 0.45% of corn . The crystallinity index of chitosan was 60.92%, and its degree of deacetylation was 75.25%. A low percentage of a supply of sucrose and asparagine with corn steep liquor offered higher yields of biomass and chitosan production at low cost.
ABSTRACTExpansive clays are problematic deposits for infrastructure projects because they can cause socio-economic and environmental damage, since they are susceptible to change in volume due to seasonal variation in humidity and temperature. The stabilization of expansive clay is of interest to any construction. The stabilization techniques may be mechanical or chemical. Hydrated lime is a stabilizing agent. Laboratory tests were conducted in order to analyze the effect of the interaction of hydrated lime with expansive soils of Ipojuca County / PE, when hydrated lime was added to it in proportions of 1% to 11% by dry weight. The physical, chemical and mineralogical characterizations were performed as well as the free swell and the expansion stress of natural soil and soil-lime mixture. The results indicate that the soil has high expansiveness and may cause damage to buildings leading to demolition, especially the smaller ones. The addition of hydrated lime to the soil caused an original aggregation or flocculation of particles and the decrease in plasticity index. The percentage of 11% of hydrated lime added to the expansive soil reduced the free swell and expansion stress to null values. This is attributed to the cementing capacity of the soil treated with lime which reduces the tendency of water absorption by the calcium saturated clay.
ABSTRACTThe volume variation of the expansive soils due to the change of water content causes socioeconomic and environmental damage to geotechnical engineering works. Two basic requirements are needed for a soil to exhibit expansiveness, one intrinsic and the other extrinsic. The first is related to the soil mineralogical composition, texture and structure and the second with the behavior of climate, the volume and the movement of groundwater, the vegetation and the anthropic occupation. The addition of lime to the expansive soil improves the geotechnical properties of the mixture. The lime has physical-chemical interactions with the expansive soil capable of stabilizing the volume variation. Several buildings under construction in the State of Pernambuco are located in areas of occurrence of expansive soils. The effect of lime treatment on the properties of Paulista expansive soil was investigated, comparing the behavior of natural soil and soil mixed with lime in the proportions of 3%, 5%, and 7% by weight. Physical, chemical and mineralogical characterization tests (by thermogravimetry (TG) and X-ray diffractometry), free expansion and expansion stress were carried out. The natural soil presented high expansiveness. The determination of the expansion voltage was influenced by the voltage trajectory followed during the test. The addition of lime to the soil caused an aggregation or flocculation of the particles and a reduction in the plasticity index. The...
Residues of agroindustrial origin can be used for various purposes, including the production of activated carbon. In order to conduct the experiment, residual biomass of Cocos nucifera-C and grape marc-B were used at the doses corresponding to 100C/0B, 75C/25B, 50C/50B, 25C/75B and 0C/100B. The appropriate operating ranges for the production of activated carbon were identified and an experiment was carried out with a full factorial design, type 32, with three replicates and a control. The activated carbon produced was in contact with the desalinator reject for 30, 60, 120 and 180 minutes, after which the extracts were physico-chemically analyzed. The data were submitted to statistical analysis, using Statistic software, with a percentage reduction in the characteristics evaluated: pH (13.2), electrical conductivity (1), sodium (4.7), potassium (35.6), calcium (3.2), magnesium (zero) and chloride (18.2), indicating the mixture of coconut fiber and grape marc in 50C/50B ratio as being the most promising in the adsorption of the chemical elements of the reject, when in contact for up to an hour.

In this paper, we describe an experimental activity involving the water treatment steps using the activated carbon made from coconut fibre and grape pomace packaged in a filter constructed with low-cost material to adsorb chemical elements present in the underground saline water before desalination. The activated carbon (CA) was prepared with grape pomace (P) and coconut fiber (C) mixtures, with coconut/pomace doses of 100/0; 75/25; 50/50; 25/75; 0/100 (the first stage of the experiment). The 50C/50P mixture was statistically considered the most suitable for the production of CA, being chemically activated with ZnCl2, underflow of 100 mL/min, at 550ºC for 60 minutes. To evaluate the efficiency of the filter with the carbon produced, different contact times were used. Tests were performed every 5 minutes totalling 60 minutes. After the pH, EC, Na, K, Ca, Mg and Cl determinations in each collection and the corresponding statistical analysis, it was noticed that in the initial five minutes there was already positive response to adsorption of the determined elements.
