Nowadays, a number of countries are setting up collaboration with China, therefore people of the world are showing great interest in learning Chinese. This kind of phenomenon is also happening in Indonesia. As China has played a greater role and Chinese language has gained a new position in the heart of Indonesian people, teaching material plays an important elements that is required to be developed. A number of Chinese language teaching materials had been published in the last few years. Due to its significant role, educational institutions and educators need to be selective in implementing teaching materials. this research aims at evaluating Chinese language teaching materials used by high schools in Bandung. This research is conducted by using mixed method. The quantitative method is used to evaluate materials and those materials were evaluated by educational administrators and teachers. Qualitative method is used to identify the types of teaching materials that are widely used in high schools in Bandung, to analyze the problems, causes and solutions based on the literary review conducted in this research. The result of the evaluation and solution gained through this research is expected to provide references for further development of Chinese language teaching materials used in high schools in Bandung.
The increased collaboration between Indonesia and China in various fields should be supported by sound and effective communication between the two parties. This partnership strongly affects the demand on Indonesian-Chinese translator and/or interpreter. The demand on interpreters are increasing rapidly, ranges from various sectors. However, Chinese language programs available in Indonesia these days are still at the undergraduate levels. Together with the increasing demand on interpreter, various Chinese language study programs are providing translation and/or interpreting courses to equip their students for future job market. As most of the Chinese language students in Indonesia begin to learn Chinese as a foreign language when they are at the university, teaching interpreting at the undergraduate level is certainly challenging compared to teaching interpreting at the postgraduate level. The writers therefore conducts a Needs Analysis on students to find out what are the needs and challenges faced by undergraduate level interpreting trainees, and what kind of curriculum design would suit the undergraduate level interpreting training. This study found that the biggest challenges for the trainees were nervousness during interpreting assignment, difficulty in delivering speech in L2 and L1, and difficulty in understanding L2 input. This study also shows that L2 correlation with trainees’ interpreting performance. The trainees in this study perceive that their foreign language skills affect their performance. Based on the Needs Analysis conducted in this study, the writers also provide suggestions for interpreting course design at the undergraduate level by putting into consideration the number and the linguistic background of students.
Language learning and cultural learning are inextricably linked to each other. Foreign language learners who are equipped with cultural understanding will possess "intercultural competence," which is essential in cross-cultural communication. In Indonesia, learning Chinese at the beginner level is still highly reliant on textbooks. Therefore, in determining textbooks, teachers must carefully evaluate every cultural aspect for students to know and comprehend while considering appropriate delivery method options. This research analyzes the beginner-level textbook, "Bahasa Tionghoa Zaman Sekarang," which has a specific target audience, namely learners who speak Indonesian as their first language. The aspects analyzed are the cultural content in the textbook and the method of delivery. This qualitative descriptive research identifies the cultural content data presented in the textbook, whose form of culture and delivery are then described and analyzed. The results of the analysis show that the textbook is remarkably rich in cultural content, especially Chinese culture. The cultural diversity of ideas, activities, and artifacts conveyed in various delivery forms within the textbook greatly supports effective learning of Chinese communication to avoid cultural misunderstandings. Considering the evolving culture and the study that has been done, the authors provide several suggestions to develop the textbook used in the future.
China’s increasing investment in Indonesia has resulted in higher demand of professional that is fluent in Chinese for business purposes. This research aims to analyze the needs of stakeholder and learners on Chinese for business purposes, and to evaluate whether this needs have been answered by curriculum implementation in higher education level. The writer analyzes the needs of stakeholder and learners by using quantitative qualitative method, evaluates teaching methods and learning materials used in X University in West Java, and compare the analysis of stakeholder and learners’ needs to the evaluation of learning materials and teaching method implemented in X University in West Java. This research aims to provide reference of stakeholder and learners’ needs on Chinese for business purposes, and thus provide basis for the design of Chinese for business purposes curriculum in Indonesia.
