Ao contrario da genética dos textos impressos, a genética artistica ignora em geral a demarcação que a ediçâo représenta ; no entanto, o primeiro enfrentamento da obra com o publico (fase de divulgaçào) pode fazer as vezes de génese editorial, com o que o processo de génese se prolonga até à recepçâo da obra. Sô as artes reprodutivas (gravura, fotografia, modelagem...) conhecem o acto de ediçâo ; a gravura chega a integrar o processo de génese no seu protocolo de realização, com a existencia dos estados, a que alias as técnicas da imagem da edição romântica frequentemente fazem curto-circuito. Numa célèbre pagina de «croquades » de 1832 que mostra a transformação do rei Louis-Philippe em Pera, Philipon adopta uma demonstraçâo scripto-visual que sugere uma linhagem genética, quando afinal ele poe em imagens o funcionamento retorico e semiotico do Rei-Pera, de que se déclara inventor. O método de anãlise genética aqui empregue analisa a circulaçâo desse signo nas colunas La Caricature e Le Charivari segundo modos sucessivos e diferentes, desde a transcriçâo redaccional até à chapa de imagens e por fim ao caligrama ; por outro lado, analisa também como o aparecimento do signo tinha sido preparado por técnicas de cripto-imagens que foram familiarizando os leitores com a figura do Rei-Pera antes do seu lançamento da paginas das «croquades ». Apos esta dupla campanha é que se efectivou a circulação do signo da Pera -para entrar no repertorio dos signos icônicos de que não mais saiu. A invençào do Rei-Pera, longe do carãcter improvisado que lhe atribui a narrativa da sua génese, foi demoradamente preparada antes de se tornar um signo grâfico reconhecido.
