L'articulation des sciences de la vie aux sciences sociales est une question qui n'a cessé de susciter interrogations et débats durant la dernière décennie. À partir de quatre exemples (neurosciences sociales, naturalisme social, épidémiologie des représentations et génétique comportementale), l'article traite du type de dialogue existant de nos jours entre ces deux champs de connaissance. Il aborde ensuite deux questions paraissant concentrer les principaux problèmes : celle des régimes de causalité en vigueur dans les deux approches et celle de la relation entre facteurs biologiques et « contexte » social. Enfin, il montre que ces débats n'épuisent pas toute de la réflexion que les sciences sociales doivent mener au sujet du bio-naturalisme, qu'il soit théorique ou appliqué.
Une nouvelle « lisibilité du monde » : Les usages des neurosciences par les intermédiaires culturels en France (1970-2000) L'essor public des neurosciences peut être appréhendé de plusieurs façons. Nous nous limiterons dans le cadre de cette contribution à en cerner les contours dans une zone spécifique du monde social, celle des producteurs culturels. Ici, la dynamique du phénomène ne peut être appréhendée sans la prise en compte de la surdétermination de cette entité culturelle qu'on appelle cerveau, au moment même où les neurosciences prétendent délivrer un discours de vérité à son sujet. Cette surdétermination pèse dans la façon même dont les neurosciences vont accéder à l'espace public. Elle consiste pour une large part en une tendance à aborder le social dans une optique individualisante et psychologisante, qu'on peut déceler à la fois chez certains intermédiaires culturels et une partie du lectorat. Evidemment, cette surdétermination en arrive à brouiller la portée intellectuelle de l'essor des neurosciences, mais ce phénomène s'observe aussi pour d'autres domaines du savoir et constitue sans aucun doute une donnée de base des processus de transfert dans l'espace public des savoirs scientifiques. Ne pas reconnaître cet état de fait reviendrait à reconduire l'idée d'une transmission verticale des débats savants, de haut en bas, et à négliger le fait que ceux-ci « tombent » le plus souvent dans l'espace public en subissant certaines « déviations » imputables aux canaux qu'on leur fait emprunter pour arriver auprès des profanes 1. Les neurosciences bénéficient dans les circuits de production culturelle de grande diffusion d'une popularité avérée et ancienne. Celle-ci a trouvé une forme de cristallisation en 2003 1 En supposant bien sûr que ces débats portent eux-mêmes toujours sur des enjeux purement théoriques. 2 avec le lancement du mensuel Cerveau & psycho, émanation de la revue Pour la science. Cet avocat parmi les plus actifs des neurosciences auprès du « grand public » affirme ainsi dans son premier éditorial : « Les mécanismes complexes de pensée, le langage, le raisonnement logique, les capacités mathématiques, la conscience, incluant émotions et sentiments, ont été des questions longtemps réservées aux philosophes ou aux psychologues, mais l'alliance récente de la psychologie cognitive et de l'imagerie cérébrale marque les premiers pas d'un programme d'étude associant psychologues et spécialistes du cerveau. Cette collaboration ne se limite pas à un échange de connaissances et à un enrichissement de la culture générale : aujourd'hui, les connaissances acquises changent notre rapport au monde. Nous découvrons l'intimité psychologique du cerveau humain et ses potentialités : ces données jettent un nouvel éclairage sur l'individu et la société. »2 De telles déclarations n'ont rien d'inédit. Résumé Depuis une quarantaine d’années, de nombreux chercheurs et praticiens issus des sciences bio-médicales ont fait une apparition remarquée sur la scène intellectuelle française, quelquefois présentée comme la manifestation d’une « révolution » intellectuelle en marche, consécutive aux progrès de la génétique ou des neurosciences. Bien que s’inscrivant dans une certaine continuité historique, les modes d’engagement de ces nouveaux porteurs de discours biologisants présentent sans doute des traits spécifiques, où l’expertise occupe une place centrale. L’explication de cette émergence passe par l’analyse des profils de ces « savants », dont les figures principales peuvent être repérées à l’aide des listes de succès de librairie parus entre 1970 et 2000, combinée à celle des conditions de visibilité de ces derniers dans l’espace public, c’est-à-dire ici dans l’espace éditorial.
