In recent years, magnetic nanoparticles have been studied due to their potential applications as magnetic carriers in biomedical area. These materials have been increasingly exploited as efficient delivery vectors, leading to opportunities of use as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents, mediators of hyperthermia cancer treatment and in targeted therapies. Much attention has been also focused on "smart" polymers, which are able to respond to environmental changes, such as changes in the temperature and pH. In this context, this article reviews the state-of-the art in stimuli-responsive magnetic systems for biomedical applications. The paper describes different types of stimuli-sensitive systems, mainly temperature- and pH sensitive polymers, the combination of this characteristic with magnetic properties and, finally, it gives an account of their preparation methods. The article also discusses the main in vivo biomedical applications of such materials. A survey of the recent literature on various stimuli-responsive magnetic gels in biomedical applications is also included.
Objective
To verify whether aging can modify the clinical and biochemical characteristics of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Material and methods
This observational cross-sectional study was conducted at the reproductive endocrinology clinics of Julio Muller University Hospital and Tropical Institute of Reproductive Medicine in Cuiabá, MT, Brazil, between 2003 and 2017. Both, 796 PCOS and 444 non-PCOS normal cycling women underwent the same examination. PCOS was diagnosed using the Rotterdam criteria as recommended for adolescent and adult subjects. Anthropometric, metabolic, and endocrinological modifications with aging were initially examined in the two groups: control and PCOS. Further analyses were performed after a 5-year age stratification of data throughout the reproductive period. All participants signed a consent form approved by the local ethical committee.
Results
Biomarkers of adiposity were more remarkable in African descendant PCOS women. Body weight, waist/hip ratio, fat mass, and BMI were higher in PCOS women and tended to increase at all 5 age-strata, between ≤19 and 35 years of age. Serum androgen levels decreased with aging, markedly in PCOS subjects (P < 0.01 for all age-strata comparisons), but remained elevated when compared with the levels found in controls. Carbohydrate markers, triglycerides, and total cholesterol tended to increase over time in PCOS (P < 0.01 for all age-strata comparisons). Total cholesterol also tended to increase with age in non-PCOS women (P = 0.041).
Conclusion
The present study has shown that the advancing age influences many features of PCOS women. Biochemical hyperandrogenism, the core criterion recommended in the current systems to define the syndrome, showed statistically significant tendencies to decrease with aging progression but did not normalize. The use of age-adjusted features for the diagnosis of PCOS are recommended.

the resistance of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC)
to targeted hormone therapy, the discovery of azobenzene combretastatin
A4 (Azo-CA4) provides therapeutic opportunities for TNBC. Here, Azo-CA4
was loaded in upconverting nanocarriers that could convert near-infrared
(NIR) light to UV light to activate Azo-CA4. Upon irradiation, Azo-CA4-loaded
nanocarriers significantly reduced the viability of TNBC cells via
both apoptosis and ferroptosis. The former was induced by photoisomerization
of Azo-CA4, accompanied by microtubule breakdown and cell cycle arrest
at G2/M phase. The latter was caused by the UV light-induced
reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ that facilitates the
peroxidation of tailored lipids. The cooperation between apoptosis
and ferroptosis in eliminating TNBC was demonstrated in a xenograft
mice model in terms of histological staining, tumor growth inhibition,
and animal survival. Since the NIR light is only applied to the tumor
site, the adverse effects of such triggered nanocarriers to the healthy
organs are negligible.
The goal of this study was to develop a new route to prepare thermally responsive polymer nanogels. Poly (N-vinylcaprolactam) nanogels were prepared via inverse miniemulsion polymerization (W/O) at 70 C using n-hexadecane as a nonpolar continuous phase, potassium persulfate as an initiator, and N,N 0 -methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker. Sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) was used as surfactant and its influence on the polymerization kinetics and on the colloidal characteristics of the nanogels were principally investigated. It was observed that the addition of a strong ''lipophobe'' is required to stabilize the resulting miniemulsion. The nanogels were characterized in terms of morphology, size, zeta potential, and thermoproperties using transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The kinetics of the solution free radical polymerization of N-vinylcaprolactam, in 1,4-dioxane and under various polymerization conditions was studied. Azobisisobutyronitrile and 3-mercaptopropionic acid were used as initiator and as chain transfer agent (CTA), respectively. The influence of monomer and initiator concentrations and polymerization temperature on the rate of polymerizations (R p ) was investigated. In general, high conversions were obtained. The order with respect to initiator was consistent with the classical kinetic rate equation, while the order with respect to the monomer was greater than unity. The overall activation energy of 53.6 kJ mol À1 was obtained in the temperature range 60-80 C. The decreasing of the absolute molecular weights when increasing the CTA concentration was confirmed by GPC/ SEC/LALS analyses. It was confirmed by UV-visible analyses the effect of molecular weights on the lower critical solution temperature of the polymers. It was also verified that the addition of the CTA influenced the kinetic of the polymerizations.
The investigation of Y-specific sequences in patients with Turner Syndrome (TS) with karyotype 45,X or mosaic, has a fundamental role in the clinical management of these patients. The relationship between the presence of Y chromosome fragments and a higher risk of gonadoblastoma in TS has already been established. The aim of the study was to investigate the presence of Y-chromosome fragments in a population of 42 female Brazilian patients with TS from Mato Grosso state. Cytogenetic analysis has shown the karyotypes 45,X in 27 of them (64.3%) and mosaic in 15 (35.7%). The presence of the Y-primers SRY, DYZ3, ZFY, DYZ1, DYS1 and PABY was investigated in all patients. These markers were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, using DNA genomic from peripheral blood lymphocytes. None of these patients had shown any Y-chromosome fragments when they were analysed only by the classic cytogenetic technique. The PCR analysis with the Y-specific sequences ZFY and DYZ3 were identified in two different patients (4.8%), both with karyotype 45,X. It was concluded that PCR is efficient in the investigation of hidden Y-fragments in TS patients. Therefore, this method should be included in the routine assistance of these patients.
Background/Aims: Definitive polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis should exclude thyroid dysfunctions. The purpose of the study is to examine the impact of subclinical hypothyroidism on the characteristics of PCOS patients. Methods: A meta-analysis of the published observational studies was conducted. Medline, Scopus, and Cochrane database search was performed to identify the studies that compared euthyroid PCOS and subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH)-PCOS patients. A total of 9 studies were selected, totalizing the inclusion of 1,537 euthyroid PCOS and 301 SCH-PCOS. The data were expressed as raw mean difference and standard error, using the random-effects model. Heterogeneity among studies was examined using the Cochran's test (Q) and I 2 statistics. Results: Anthropometrical parameters were similar in both groups. Total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) were higher in SCH-PCOS (p = 0.036 and p = 0.012). High-density lipoprotein cholesterol was lower in the SCH-PCOS group (p = 0.018). Fasting glucose was lower in euthyroid PCOS (p = 0.022). All androgen levels were similar in both group (p > 0.05 for all). Conclusion: TC, TG and fasting glucose were higher in SCH-PCOS patients. Because of the heterogeneity among studies, some summarized results should be interpreted with caution. Consistent data for future studies addressing PCOS diagnosis are provided.
