International audienceThe last three eruptions at the Cordón Caulle volcanic complex, Chile, have been strikingly similar in that they have started with relatively short pre-eruptive warning and produced chemically homogeneous rhyolite to rhyodacite magma with glassy to aphyric texture. These characteristics collectively call for an understanding of the storage conditions leading to the rise and extraction of crystal-poor silicic magma from volcanoes. We have analyzed and experimentally reproduced the mineral assemblage and glass chemistry in rhyolite magma produced in the most recent eruption of Cordón Caulle, and we use these to infer magma storage and ascent conditions. Fe-Ti oxide mineral geothermometry suggests that the rhyolite was stored at ∼870-920 °C. At these temperatures, the phenocryst assemblage (plag∼An37 > cpx + opx > mag + ilm) can be reproduced under H2O-saturated conditions of between 100 and 50 MPa, corresponding to crustal depths between about 2.5 and 5.0 km. The shallow and relatively hot magma storage conditions have implications for the rapid onset, degassing efficiency, and progression from explosive to mixed pyroclastic-effusive eruption style at Cordón Caulle
[1] Magmas in volcanic conduits commonly contain microlites in association with preexisting phenocrysts, as often indicated by volcanic rock textures. In this study, we present two different experiments that investigate the flow behavior of these bidisperse systems. In the first experiments, rotational rheometric methods are used to determine the rheology of monodisperse and polydisperse suspensions consisting of smaller, prolate particles (microlites) and larger, equant particles (phenocrysts) in a bubble-free Newtonian liquid (silicate melt). Our data show that increasing the relative proportion of prolate microlites to equant phenocrysts in a magma at constant total particle content can increase the relative viscosity by up to three orders of magnitude. Consequently, the rheological effect of particles in magmas cannot be modeled by assuming a monodisperse population of particles. We propose a new model that uses interpolated parameters based on the relative proportions of small and large particles and produces a considerably improved fit to the data than earlier models. In a second series of experiments we investigate the textures produced by shearing bimodal suspensions in gradually solidifying epoxy resin in a concentric cylinder setup. The resulting textures show the prolate particles are aligned with the flow lines and spherical particles are found in well-organized strings, with sphere-depleted shear bands in high-shear regions. These observations may explain the measured variation in the shear thinning and yield stress behavior with increasing solid fraction and particle aspect ratio. The implications for magma flow are discussed, and rheological results and textural observations are compared with observations on natural samples.
Purpose
CEST MRI enables imaging of distributions of low‐concentrated metabolites as well as proteins and peptides and their alterations in diseases. CEST examinations often suffer from low spatial resolution, long acquisition times, and concomitant motion artifacts. This work aims to maximize both resolution and volume coverage with a 3D‐EPI snapshot CEST approach at 3T, allowing for fast and robust whole‐brain CEST MRI.
Methods
Resolution and temporal SNR of 3D‐EPI examinations with nonselective excitation were optimized at a clinical 3T MR scanner in five healthy subjects using a clinical head/neck coil. A CEST presaturation module for low power relayed nuclear Overhauser enhancement and amide proton transfer contrast was applied as an example. The suggested postprocessing included motion correction, dynamic B0 correction, denoising, and B1 correction and was compared to an established 3D‐gradient echo‐based sequence.
Results
CEST examinations were performed at 1.8 mm nominal isotropic resolution in 4.3 s per presaturation offset. In contrast to slab‐selective 3D or multislice approaches, the whole brain was covered. Repeated examinations at three different B1 values took 13 minutes for 58 presaturation offsets with temporal SNR around 75. The resulting CEST effects revealed significant gray and white matter contrast and were of similar quality across the whole brain. Coefficient of variation across three healthy subjects was below 9%.
Conclusion
The suggested protocol enables whole brain coverage at 1.8 mm isotropic resolution and fast acquisition of 4.3 s per presaturation offset. For the fitted CEST amplitudes, high reproducibility was proven, increasing the opportunities of quantitative CEST investigations at 3T significantly.
