Road bridges between actual and future heavy load traffic – Road traffic loads according to DIN EN 1991‐2/NAThe effects of the actual heavy load traffic on the Germen road network and the predicted future development of this traffic to the actions on road bridges are analysed. The main focus are the loads for the design of new road bridges. Analyses for the load on existing bridges are given too. Those are part of the guideline for recalculation of bridges.
For an assessment of the necessity, the efficiency and the prioritization of repair and upgrading measures for bridges, object‐specific knowledge of structural stresses and structural conditions is indispensable. From the identification of traffic occupancy (quantity and quality) and the analysis of the structural reactions, statements on the current load‐bearing capacity of an existing bridge will derived. A necessary data basis is the traffic data of the real traffic determined for the specific bridge.

In the last years a scientific project was edited by the chair of traffic facility structures of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar/Germany. Simulations for the actual and the predicted heavy load traffic were made. Based on these analyses it was detected, that the current load model for bridges is not future-proof. A modified load model with higher load values has been developed by several preliminary considerations and it was possible to show, that this load is sufficiently future-proof. With some examples the realized steps of the research work and the determined results are shown in this paper. Finally some suggestions for further necessary scientific research work are shown. The scientific project was executed under the authority of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs (BMVBS) and the Federal Highway Research Institute (BAST) of Germany.
